WOAI is one ed up outfit. But they seem to get ratings despite themselves. Too bad Clearchannel didn't get totally wiped out in the aftermath of their financial mismanagement and resulting chopping up. Those people ruined radio in this country.

I'm willing to bet that you're in fact Jay Howard giving yourself an ego boost by posting this thread.

And why does Bill need to do a talk show? I don't find it elitist at all that a guy who works 9 months of the year traveling needs to also host a talk show that would be just the same if Walter Pasacrita were the host. And why does he need to have a concept of San Antonio culture? It's basketball. Last time I checked basketball is pretty much the same in San Antonio as it is in Austin, or even Europe. Sure the level of play is different, but there are still 10 players on a hardwood court trying to put a ball through a hoop. It's not that hard to grasp. And if Jay were so "talented and memorable" why wouldn't the Spurs try to keep him? As I have heard, the Spurs went after Schoening, they were the ones who approached him about replacing Howard.
    I agree bang=jay

and it would be like jay to pat himself on the back.

As someone who lives away from SA and listens to his share of Spurs radio, I admit it took a while for me to warm up to Schoenig. Howard was fantastic, but Schoenig is solid and good, in his own right. The guy is a pro's pro.

From time to time, I've heard him make guest appearances on our local Dallas airwaves. He answers all questions in thought-provoking style and comes off knowledgeable and with a sense of humor.

Quick Story: A couple of years ago, Bill got really pissed off at a couple of local blowhards on our Ticket Sports station (AM 1310) - and with good reason. They invited Bill onto the show for an interview, prior to an upcoming Spurs/Mavs tilt. Instead of a normal interview, these guys started invoking their own personal brand of schtick, complete with some non-basketball questions and some veiled insults of the Spurs and such. Schoenig asked what the purpose of the interview was, then calmly and casusally chastized them and excused himself from the interview. Of course, these later guys criticized Bill for having no sense of humor. Damn fools!

No, lamebrain. I've worked in biotech since '91. I just like local programming and am extremely tired of hearing Clearchannel's prepackaged extreme-right-wing-jesus-freak propaganda all over the country. I actually like Rush because he's an original but I puke at Hannity, Miller and the other copycat morons that pollute the national airwaves thanks to Clearchannel.

And yes I really salivated at the though of Clearchannel's collapse and disappearance from the corporate scene.

I guess it is my turn to assume that you're one of their current corporate s...

Jay Howard's mouth sucked too much Spurs ......if he would have been a little more unbiased and onjective he would still have his job.

The reason that he isn't there anymore is precisely the opposite of what you just said. Nice work.

Shut up, you idiot. If Jay Howard had any talent, don't you think he could have at least gotten the Memphis Grizzlies gig? Clear Channel did a nationwide talent search to bring in Schoening from Austin, Taylor from Dallas and Pasacrita from Jersey. Sit back and enjoy the broadcasts or move out of San Antonio, loser.

Ever thought the reason he didn't get another gig was because he didn't want another gig in radio?

I agree that Jay Howard was good, but he didn't treat people well and had a huge ego. He hasn't been able to get a decent radio job since and I believe he's now out of radio (at one point a few years back I heard he was going into real estate). That should tell you something ... Because pretty much any radio guy can just move on to another station.
    That's it and that's all.

Schoening made the next two better. And while I am a spurs fan, why are the Spurs the pride of the lone star state? While pretty much everyone who doesn't live under a rock has heard of them there are other things in Texas. For example the Rockets and the Mavs. The University of Texas, the Astros and Rangers. Compared to "the pride of Texas" Remember the alamo makes more sence because that is what San Antionio as a city is known for.

Plus while I don't have the Duncan 3 pointer on hand, I do have the copy of Bill's game 5 of the NBA finals(2005) at hand and robert Horry's shot call was pretty good(as well as Sean's color comentary, this was before he became a huge homer) I even listened for some of the "flaws" pointed out and didn't really notice anything.

Although I did think about what people liked about Jay. He had been with the Spurs for 12 years, and he did have a talk show where he talked to the fans and had a Q&A with Pop. That was the same situation with Schoening in Austin, he showed his personality off a lot and answered the questions of the fans. Had Schoening decided to do a 4-7 talk show in San Antonio he might be more popular, but several times he has stated that he likes the Spurs because he doesn't not do a talk show and he gets the summer between the Spurs' emilination or championship victory and October off. I don't blame the guy, thats a nice job. You travel to major cities, live in nice hotels and get to do what you want in the months of summer. If he didn't have to do a talk show, why would he?

Jay paid tribute to terry stembridge with that quote. It funny though how memorable quotes can be.
Thats a manu tres, tre bien for tony
Jay: Sean Elliott with an off balance three.....B-A-N-G!!!
You reference schoenig's play by play on horry shot, what did he say. The moment was memorable what was the soundbite. Like I said, It's alright that schoenig is the play by play, I just don't listen nearly as much as I used to. Its a personal preference. I know people don't like jay and some don't like bill. I was dissapointed to see terry stembridge go and thought no one could ever replace him, but they did and some day they will replace bill. I just wonder how many play by play quotes would be relieved if jay cover a couple of those championship games.

I swear without even listening to the audo I have on a disk somewhere this is word for word what Bill Schoening said on his Horry play. "Inbound pass will come from Robert Horry over to the corner to Manu Ginobili-back out to Horry for three-left wing! The shot is good by Robert Horry! He puts the Spurs up by one with 5.8 seconds to go!" On top of that he came up with Manu vodoo which was played on NBA TV for several months.

The fact is I really don't care anymore. Everyone has their own opinion on who is better at what. I thought Jay was slow and boring and most of the time was just going through the motions. Granted he could have been a very good talk show guy for you guys in San Antonio, but I will find it hard to believe he was better than Schoening was down here.

And going back to what SenorSpur was saying, I once heard Bill, on a national radio show durring the 2005 NBA finals stand up to this big time NFL player on the show who called Tim Duncan soft. Schoening showed him up. He was like "Is Ben Wallace tough?" The guy answered yes. So Schoening said back, "So just because Tim Duncan doesn't bang his chest, or talk trash he is soft? Let me tell you, you can't be soft and average 20 points and 10 rebounds in the NBA."

Bill was never on that show again to my knowledge but he defended the Spurs and Tim when people talked bad about them.
Damn...good story. I've gotta keep that one (ask his ass about it too).

I was going to say the same thing but Kori beat me to it... Did y'all ever actually listen to his show those last years??? ..He had become to big for himself...he hung up on people... talked down to first time callers who called to ask simple questions... he and Laura Green were constantly smacking down Pasacrita when he first got there... the routine just got old..

...so Kori is right..thats probably why he doesnt have a job right now...

The reason that he isn't there anymore is precisely the opposite of what you just said. Nice work.
The reason he isn't here is that he fell for the Del Negro ploy, and rejected a Spurs offer when they really didn't want to pay him more. He was not fired. I repeat, he was not fired. His contract had elapsed. Any time you turn down an employer's new contract offer, you are putting your continued employment in jeopardy.

Ever thought the reason he didn't get another gig was because he didn't want another gig in radio?
Uh, yeah, like that's not a massive rationalization.

He's working for a financial management firm in SA. He was a blatant homer on the air, but what the ? Local broadcast of the local team... I always sort of expected that. And I enjoyed listening to the games he called. That being said, he can be pretty abrasive and negative in person. That's not exactly an asset in a job that is, in many ways, a popularity contest.

I'm sure there were a list of reasons why he "went away". But Numero Uno on the list was when he called out the owner of Body Solutions on the air, and pointed out that he was fat. That was sort of a problem since the guy was selling a "miracle" weight-loss product, and his company was a MAJOR source of advertising revenue. Say whatever you want to, but he was doomed from the moment he made that comment.

The sad thing is, of all the things Jay ever said, I think that was his crowning moment. I thought it was hilarious at the time, but I was also happy that somebody had the courage to call Body Solutions on the carpet. It had to be obvious to everyone that either a) the guy wasn't using his own product, or b) the product didn't work. As it turned out, the product was a scam. The company went belly-up, and left a lot of businesses in town (including WOAI, I believe?) holding a lot of unpaid bills.

Hilarious? Yes. Courageous? Maybe. Smart? Not even close. Sean might have gotten by with the comment by making it funny*, but Jay made it clear he was calling the guy a phony. And yes, that incident probably didn't help his prospects when he went looking for a similar broadcast job elsehwere. There may even have been a little blacklist action behind the scenes.

I like Schoening just fine, but I think I had more fun listening to Jay. He was totally unashamed of being a homer, so I can see why the fans from other teams wouldn't like him. But to answer the le question... no, he will probably never return to the airwaves.

*One of my all-time favorites was when Sean said that Ben Wallace's hair made him look like a Mr. Microphone. Nobody else could get by with that.
