(CNN) Bill Clinton said Monday the Democratic ticket should steer clear of launching personal attacks on Sarah Palin over her relatively thin resume, and instead acknowledge she was a "good choice" for the No. 2 spot on the GOP ticket.
"Why say, ever, anything bad about a person? Why don't we like them and celebrate them and be happy for her elevation to the ticket? And just say that she was a good choice for him and we disagree with them?" said Clinton, who faced repeated charges during the primary season he was overly negative toward Obama on the campaign trail.
Clinton's comments appear to echo advice Karl Rove gave to Barack Obama in his regular Wall Street Journal column last week, when the former Bush strategist noted attacking the VP candidate has rarely proven to be an effective strategy.
In one of the former president's few extended comments to date on Palin's surprise VP candidacy, Clinton also told reporters in New York Monday he knows why the Alaska governor is attracting massive crowds on the campaign trail.
"I come from Arkansas, I get why she's hot out there," Clinton told reporters in New York, according to the Associated Press. "Why she's doing well."
"People look at her, and they say, 'All those kids. Something that happens in everybody's family I'm glad she loves her daughter and she's not ashamed of her. Glad that girl's going around with her boyfriend. Glad they're going to get married,'" he said.
Referencing Palin's 5-month old child who has Down Syndrome, Clinton also said voters will think, "I like that little Down syndrome kid one of them lives down the street, they're wonderful children.
Earlier Monday, Clinton suggested his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, would have been a better political choice for the Democratic VP spot than Joe Biden.
She would have been the best politically, at least in the short run, because of her enormous support of the country, he said on the daytime talk show The View.

This comment seemed a little condescending, but perhaps it wasn't meant that way.

Come on-- he's pushing to keep things civil, advocating against mud-slinging, and complimenting Palin and the only thing you can find to comment on is that? It seems like stretch to me. He's praising her choice and her child.

That line just kind of seemed odd to me when I was reading the article.
Bill and Hillary seem to be keeping a low profile in the campaign. Has Obama invited them to be more active or they just sitting this one out?
But I also thought it was interesting that he made these statements.
I've heard people, and read comments on here, say that they think the Clinton's are NOT (oops)...really supporting Obama...

I added the word "not", and that's why I put it in caps and underlined.
They aren't supporting the party. They want whatever they think will best set them up for Hillary 2012, which you have to think would mean Obama getting beat.

God, Bill can't win. If he advocated attacking Palin and made negative comments about her state and her children, people would jump on this forum and use it as an example of how mean he is. But he advocates civility and praises her as a person and say the democrats must take her candidacy seriously, and that's just proof that he's secretly rooting for Obama to lose?! That is a ridiculous conspiracy theory if I ever heard one.
Read into the article or people's comments however you want.
Palin is a non-issue now.
The Democrats have succeeded in marginalizing her and now that the economy is front and center the only thing that matters is Obama and McCain.
Well, that is a good thing I guess, at least we aren't debating about putting lipstick on a pig, to bad it took a financial crisis to get the campaigns focused on issues that really matter though...

Clinton was very articulate and poised on the View. He talked about how you do not have to hate someone to choose not to vote for him or her. You can simply pick the one you want. He even said he has read liberal women who say they will vote for McCain- Palin because gender is the single most issue important to them- regardless of the rest.
I love how they spliced the video to remove the part where Clinton said- "Obama is ready to be president and McCain is ready to be president" only to have the second half of the statement!
They also left out where Clinton said he believes Obama WILL win and listed the reasons why.
