ST. LOUIS (AP)—Brandon Webb won his 22nd game and Stephen Drew homered to help the Arizona Diamondbacks creep closer in the NL West with a 4-2 victory on Monday night.

Conor Jackson had two hits and an RBI for the Diamondbacks, who have won seven of eight and are two games behind the idle Dodgers with six games to go. Arizona has won three in a row on the road on the heels of a franchise-record 10-game road losing streak.

Felipe Lopez and Cesar Izturis had three hits apiece for the Cardinals, who have lost 10 of 12 and are only four games above .500 for the first time since they were 24-20 on May 16. St. Louis’ magic number is one to be eliminated from postseason contention.

    A. Pujols got strucked out by webb on his 117 pitch

Two games back with six to play. Each team has three on the road, and three at home, only in reverse. Diamondbacks finish their season at home vs. a team they've slaughtered all season long in the Rockies. The Dodgers finish on the road vs. a team they've played .500 ball against all season long in the Giants. They face Lince on the final day.

If the Diamondbacks can go 5-1 over there next six, and the Dodgers go 3-3, then they can force a one-game playoff at Dodgers stadium.

They have to go 5-1 or better, though. 4-2 won't cut it because then you need the Dodgers to play below .500 ball, something they are unlikely to do.

It goes to show that you shouldn't write a team off until they really are mathematically eliminated. A week ago, this didn't seem possible.

would surprise me if dbacks pull it out

st is playing for nothing now though

giants also hate dodgers so you know they will try to beat them and make them miss the playoffs

St. Louis is also using the expanded roster and playing their AAA players. Brian Barton will be good for at least one win. His play in LF handed the Cubs' clinching game to them.

I still don't know. If they can win tonight with the Dodgers losing, then, being one game back with five to play, I'll start to have faith in them again. Sorry... They've been too damn inconsistent all season long. Whenever they've had good times, equally as bad times were right around the corner.

Drew has really stepped his game up, though. He's a very good defensive shortstop, and now his bat is finally starting to live up to its billing.

    Post All-Star Break: 58 games

    .325 average, .363 OBP, .920 OPS with 8 hr, 6 3b, 21 2b, 41 runs, 31 rbi,

If he can sustain that over a full season starting next year, that around 20-to-25 homers, 15-to-20 triples, 45-to-60 doubles with over 100 runs scored and near 100 RBI.

Yeah, with the deficit now being three with five to go, I'm 90% certain they're done. Kaput. Finito.

If LA wasn't playing such cupcakes (SD and SF), I might feel differently.
