Screw all this freedom of expressing yourself by making yourself look like an idiot, this sense of individuality and need to be unique. It's all BS. Scrub your damn face and act like a normal kid.

That being said, I wouldn't force him to remove it or kick him out of school for purposely looking like a joke.

I remember when I moved to Austin and my first day of school at Austin High I walked in and this guy was sitting in the hallway painting his toes. I was like WTF?! That school was crazy as . You had kids from the projects all the way to the Bush twins going there when I was there. It was more than diverse it was super diverse.

I don't think that is a "cry for freedom." I think it is a "cry for attention."

Since becoming a parent I have noticed that there a lot of self-absorbed parents out there. The kids compete for attention in an environment where the parents have conflicting priorities (TV, careers, drama, etc.). Often, instead of planning around the kids(s) the kids are tagged-alone as burdensome accessory.

I haven't often been accused of being a bigot but I suppose that may be true. I can't remember meeting a happy, well-adjusted goth.

If it was a cry for attention he would have likely looked a lot more outlandish than that.

    Alrightty, but freedom from what?

He will certainly be free of the pestering of interested girls (Or boys either, I imagine, if that's the way his taste goes. Although I'll admit I'm supposing boys would be attracted conventional good-looks and that may be wrong). For that matter, he will likely be free of a lot of social interaction.

He can dress like he wants, wear makeup as he wants, do whatever he wants...just not at school. If kids want to kick his ass because of the makeup then it's disturbing the school environment, not to mention placing his own safety at risk. That's why schools have dress codes ... in part they teach something about responsible behavior but they more than that they are intended to protect students, mainly from themselves.

Bottom line: individuality and self expression is great ... until you have to get a job and earn a living. Then, all of sudden, conformity looks beautiful.

only because its what pays the bills. However we're talking about a time in that kids life where he doesn't have the same responsibilities as grown adults.

true. But isn't part of what education should do is prepare students to become productive members of society e.g. get a job? I'm thinking the real lessonis balance and moderation. Learn to express yourself, but learn that there is a time and place for everything.

It's not always "the man" out to get you. sometimes common sense has to rule.

Oh I'm normal and every single person should model their life after me. Also they should think the way I think too.

If you want to have freedom of expression in the workplace then you need a "career" and not a job. I watched the Chris Rock show on HBO.

i say to ignore it because he's just looking for attention. eventually he'll notice that nobody gives a damn about him, and he'll no longer have an incentive to put it on every morning.

I'd rather wear a banana suit and walk around calling myself banana man than they to be "normal" and look like everyone else.

Okay so this kid purposely wants to look like a freak, fine. The other kids may not so much be distracted but repulsed; they shun the kid, kid is a joke, whether or not it's right he is not accepted into their cliques. Everyone knows that's what high school is like, right? So after years of being not accepted, and an outcast, kid gets fed up and goes Columbine on the place for not accepting him. All those school vigilantes claim they couldn't take the rejection anymore. I know it's wrong to be judgemental and not accepting of differences, but what should the school board actually do? Try to get the one kid to conform, or change the mindset of the entire high school population? High school has been like that forever, any significant change of thinking is gonna be real slow in coming; and in the meantime there may be a risk of a bunch of innocent kids getting killed. Which side should they opt for? Like being between a rock and a hard thing.

You do not have the same rights of expression in school as a kid as when you are an adult. Plain and simple.

For the record, my kid's school specifically forbids nail polish and make-up on boys in the student handbook.

exactly. It's like prison which also happens to be a publicly funded ins ution. If the warden says "no black colored eye liner" then tough........wear your black eyeliner when you get out on parole.

, plenty of middle schools around these parts force kids to wear uniforms.

Point being, if the public school allows you to go to that school tuition free, then you do what school tells you to. Otherwise, have mommy home school you while teaching you the finer points of painting your nails with skull and cross bones.
