exactly. It's like prison which also happens to be a publicly funded ins ution. If the warden says "no black colored eye liner" then tough........wear your black eyeliner when you get out on parole.

, plenty of middle schools around these parts force kids to wear uniforms.

Point being, if the public school allows you to go to that school tuition free, then you do what school tells you to. Otherwise, have mommy home school you while teaching you the finer points of painting your nails with skull and cross bones.
tuition free? The public pays for public schools.

what the is a normal kid? Who makes that decision ?
Exactly! If we are talking what is socially common, I guess that means a uniform regulation that says he has to start popping his collar before he can attend class

why should he have to change who he is to be accepted ? Believe it or not but kids dress like that because they like to.
I totally agree. But high school is screwed up like that, it's not right, it just is. My point was about the school board and their potentially no win situation.

    Jeenyus.

This kid does not have to pay one penny out of his pocket directly to the school for tuition.

and to your point, if the public that pays for schools decides that it is distracting, then too bad. Go home school or wait til college when you can look like Marilyn Manson while burning all the hippie lettuce you can buy from the homeless guy on the corner asking for a handout.

Okay so this kid purposely wants to look like a freak, fine. The other kids may not so much be distracted but repulsed; they shun the kid, kid is a joke, whether or not it's right he is not accepted into their cliques. Everyone knows that's what high school is like, right? So after years of being not accepted, and an outcast, kid gets fed up and goes Columbine on the place for not accepting him. All those school vigilantes claim they couldn't take the rejection anymore. I know it's wrong to be judgemental and not accepting of differences, but what should the school board actually do? Try to get the one kid to conform, or change the mindset of the entire high school population? High school has been like that forever, any significant change of thinking is gonna be real slow in coming; and in the meantime there may be a risk of a bunch of innocent kids getting killed. Which side should they opt for? Like being between a rock and a hard thing.
You think that Columbine happened because of lipstick? Columbine happened because kids who were mentally ill did not get treatment even though they clearly needed it beforehand. Columbine happened because parents don't pay attention to their kids and realize they were burgeoning sociopaths. It had nothing to do with black lipstick or makeup on boys.

Not only that, one could argue that surpressing a child's need to express himself could result in rage. Personally, I would rather have kids expressing themselves so you know what you are dealing with, rather than making them suppress themselves then having an unknown quan y.

well, let's let pyro kid come to class too.

God forbid we tell pyro kid to put out his flames because the fire might be distracting to other students. Of course, I'd like to get a poll from the other students, just to get their opinion on whether or not pyro kid is really a distraction.

Yeah, that is a really good analogy, seeing as how arson is against the law and lipstick is not.

I would not want to hurt his dreams of being in the circus but I was just talking about that the kid wears

I didnt say let the kid burn down the building.

but yeah, not the best analogy, but at some point you have to draw a line at what's acceptable and what's not. What's the cut off? How long should pants be? How long should ear rings be? Should guys be allowed to wear hoop ear rings? How bout a skirt too? , this emo kid is already half there.

If the school tells you it isn't acceptable, then bust out your nail polish remover then sit down and shut the up.

bottom line is if the kid is there to learn what difference does it make what he dresses like , but not a skirt. It would have to be a skort.

I know Columbine didn't happen because of lipstick But you don't think the black trenchcoat thing they used to "express themselves" as misfits didn't exacerbate the ostracization which they then internalized and finally let explode in rage?
And again the point I was trying to make had to do with the position and potential actions of school boards in these kinds of situations.

if it didn't make a difference, there would be no dress code at any school anywhere in the world.

There is an atmosphere that the classroom and the school needs in order to keep the students focused on learning and not on their fellow classmates.

I went to three different highschools and each one was so different as far as how the students dressed. At Edison here in SA they all dressed “gangster” or “cholo” and thought they were cool. Then at Jefferson they stepped it up a bit and I saw a few mohawks and stuff like that along with the gangster crap. Then when I moved to Austin it was like a tv show. You had the wannabe gang members that dressed like gang members from tv and movies and you had the “cowboys” then there were the ones that dressed like their favorite tv show characters. In fact one of the guys from my graduating class was/is on that show The O.C. I am not sure if it’s even on anymore or what his character name is. Then the had Jenna and Barbara Bush and their clique. It was weird to say the least.

If these kids are wanting to learn why worry about their fellow classmates. So throw out the chick with the big s because the guys in class can't learn.
