Looks like the Lakers are close to signing Bynum to a long term contract. I'm guessing since it's pre-season, they're banking that Bynum will be taking the $78 million instead of the $88 million his agent is asking for.

Overheard: Andrew Bynum could be the $88 million dollar man

A source has reported that Andrew Bynum’s agent, David Lee, is trying to get an $88 million dollar deal on the table with the Lakers. This is up from a reported $80 million dollar deal before. Exact terms of the contract are not known but it is believed to be a 5 year deal.

It’s been old news that Bynum was looking for the Max but this is pushing the envelope. Oddly enough, last year, Bynum was quoted as saying that he’d be fine without getting the max, the power of agents I suppose.

What isn’t old news is that the Lakers are willing to meet Bynumite close to the max at the $78 million mark and they’re ready to make a deal before the season starts. The source also said that Andrew is looking “phenomenal” in the pre-pre season workouts with no apparent lingering effects of the surgery. In fact, Bynum looks much stronger than he was last year.

Lakers GM, Mitch Kupchak has made it no secret that Bynum is the future of the Lakers and he’ll do whatever it takes to sign him. If you’ve been watching Bynum and witnessed his quantum improvement, you can see Kupchak ain’t foolin’ around.

Sounds good. Just lock him up. And Spur-Addict, not many good names for Drew. We usually call him Bynumite or KoBynum.(the second is a combo)

I wouldn't pay him until he proves he is worth it through consistant play. I would make him play out the year to get a more thorough evaluation of his abilities. Although Bynum has shown promise he hasn't sustained it long enough, or on a high enough level to pay him that kind of money. If he plays the entire year (without reinjuring his knee) and plays to his former best or beyond, then by all means pay the man. If he doesn't you don't have to kick yourself for investing that kind of money in a bust. It would be foolish to pay $78-88 million dollars to the next Olawokandi. Be sure you have someplace to land before you jump.

How about these for nicknames or phrases:

    That guy is over-bynumed.
    Andrew Bynotproven
    AB88
    Bynumnuts
    Bynumskull
    Andrew Bynuffofthis

Now, those are not all of them, but I just wanted to start a brainstorming session, so feel free to add on.

The kid's agent is really pushing it. Getting a little too big for the britches.

The kid has great promise and potential, but is that worth a guaranteed $18 million a year? Look at Nene and the contract he got despite being injured the summer he negotiated it. Two years into that $60 million contract and he's been injured both years.

I say at this point, even by NBA standards and all his potential, he's worth around $12 million a year until he produces numbers around 15/10 for an entire season, staying healthy for that entire season. But, he's asking for $18 million and the Lakers are already offering close to $16 million a year.

is crazy when you're 7 feet tall, young and athletic.

Bynum looks a lot bigger but, that might not be a good thing. Only time will tell which is why they should not pay him right now.

    holy

Pau is one of the few guys who is an actual 7'0" and Bynum has a bit on him.

Id say hes about 7'2, 290 in shoes.

    He looks intimidating.

No, it defintely is a good thing. His lack of "strength" has been his biggest weakness since he has came into the league.

    vs

    Good luck NBA.

Bynum looks huge. If he stays healthy and focused, he can really help, especially on the defensive end. He also should get 12-15 shots per game. I would not be surprised to see him average 16 and 8.

Bynum averaged 10 boards in 28 minutes last season. No way in is he only going to get 8 boards a game this year.

If anything, Bynum won't be recieving too many shots. He'll be the third option and the team wants him to focus more on rebounding/defense. I'd say 14/12/2-3 isn't out the realm of possibility.

He did not have Pau on the team and on the floor at the same time. Odom, Pau are both good rebounders, that will eat into Bynum's numbers.

Odom moving to three will reduce his rebounds. If anything, Bynum is going to eat Pau's rebounding numbers. Neither Odom or Pau are great at boxing out or leaping. Bynum will be gobbling up most of loose boards in his vincinity.

    WTF?

I had heard Bynum had gotten bigger, but damn, he looks almost as yoked as DHo. Got damn.

As for paying him...if the Lakers can get him with $50-$60 million, they should get him to sign right now.

For $78 million, they should hold out and see how he does.

Bynum has 2-3 inches and at least 40 pounds on Howard at this point. I doubt Bynum will ever be that "cut" though.
