Rockets Notes: Yao goes with flow at camp
    By JONATHAN FEIGEN

Rockets center Yao Ming returned to practice Friday, saying he felt none of the soreness he had after the first two days of practices and seeming to embrace this season’s plan to have him take more breaks than in the past.

“My goal is to play 82 games and then the playoffs,” Yao said. “I need myself fresh in March and April, and hopefully more, May and June.

“It (cutting back on his workload) is a new experience for me. Before, I didn’t need to think about it. I just worked harder and worked hard, got more experience, got more skills and training and used them in the game. Right now, I need more balance. Should I go now or should I stop?”

Yao said he has had no soreness in the right foot, site of the stress fracture that forced him to miss the final 26 games of last season, but wanted to avoid pushing through muscle fatigue.

“When muscles get tired, all the pressure goes to the bone. I think that’s when last season’s injury happened. But you ought to go ask a doctor.”

Yao did, however, feel stronger after taking most of Thursday off.

“In my body, I felt fresher, but I don’t want to get too many off,” he said. “When you get the first day off, you’re looking for the next, then you’re looking for a third, then looking for a week, then looking for a month. Then, you’re retired.”

    Abdur-Rahim fan
Ron Artest said he was pleased to hear that former Kings teammate Shareef Abdur-Rahim joined the Kings coaching staff, but still thought about what could have been in Abdur-Rahim’s injury-marred career.

“Man, he would have been a career 20 and 10 guy,” Artest said. “As much as I know he wanted to win championships, I feel for him. I would have loved to see him have a Hall of Fame career. I played with him that one season with coach (Rick) Adelman. He had a great (playoff) series. He was dominant in the post against Tim Duncan. His knee just didn’t let him finish.”

    Open scrimmage today
The Rockets will hold their annual open scrimmage today. Doors open at Toyota Center at noon for auditions for membership in the Red Rowdy fan group.

The scrimmage, part of a larger rally, is scheduled to begin between 1 and 1:30. The first 500 fans in attendance may receive vouchers for player autographs.
