I didn't like the self-aggrandizing little troll doll when he was a player. I detested the speech he gave after they won the championship. I really got pissed when they retired David Robinson's jersey, and AJ got up and talked about himself. I didn't waver a bit when he started coaching for Cuban.
I don't give a damn if he was on the first championship team. (So were Antonio Daniels and Steve Kerr.) He was an adequate point guard who had Tim Duncan and David Robinson on the floor with him. He may be called the Little General, but Mario Elie had more to do with making that team tough, and keeping them motivated, than AJ ever did.
AJ played the same role with the Spurs that Trent Dilfer played with the Baltimore Ravens. He theoretically ran the offense... but his main contribution was not getting them into trouble on the offensive end, while the defense won the game. Retiring AJ's jersey makes every bit as much sense as retiring Dilfer's would make in Baltimore.
Maybe Avery is a good man - I don't know. My main source of information about Avery Johnson is... Avery Johnson. But I know what kind of basketball player he was. He was adequate. Nothing more. Maybe he fit Pop's sytem particularly well, but you can thank Pop and the system for that. And while he may bring some value as a coach, AJ has never been shy about letting people know that he's doing his part, whether the players are or not. He's never figured out that it's about the players.
If I really believed that AJ would never come here to coach because fans like me don't deserve it? I would feel like I had actually contributed to the team.
[Edit] BTW - if you really want to celebrate someone who has made a difference to the Spurs and their fans, give a jersey to Noel Elliott and then retire it.
[Edit2] My dad, before he died, used to say that Avery Johnson could bite a pumpkin through a picket fence. Not very nice, but funny as . I laughed again just now thinking about AJ's cheshire cat grin.

Yeah they just never seem to come down to Texas anymore. I saw them at ACL and Stubb's a few years back but now they come nowhere near Texas. I am seriously thinking about looking to see what their booking fees are.
