Mike Monroe: 3 Spurs won't make trip to Houston
It's just the first pre-season game, so it is no great surprise that the three Spurs nursing injuries won't make the trip to Houston Thursday morning for that night's game against the Rockets at Toyota Center.
Kurt Thomas (left hamstring strain), Salim Stoudamire (right groin strain) and Ian Mahinmi (sprained right ankle) will remain in San Antonio and get some more medical treatment.
Stoudamire's situation worsened a bit Wednesday morning when his right groin tightened after he had gone through most of the practice session. His injury was to be re-examined by the team's medical staff after practice. Signed to a two-year contract that is not fully guaranteed the week before camp began, Stoudamire will need to prove himself in some pre-season games to earn a roster spot, but he can't push himself to play before he is ready.
Tim pans trim
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich took a trimmer to the beard he had cultivated throughout the off-season, showing up at Wednesday's practice with a beard roughly half as full as it had been.
Though Popovich had promised to adhere to the wishes of team captain Tim Duncan about his facial hair, he made a unilateral decision to apply the scissors, and Duncan was not happy.
"I did not tell him to trim it," Duncan said, "and I'm disappointed that he didn't just go with the whole thing. He did trim it up a little bit, and it looks good. I guess he's not going to go the whole Santa Claus look."
Tough break for Ian and Salim. I really wanted to see Ian play a whole NBA game....this sucks....
Isn't there one more obvious person who should be staying home?
That's a terrible news for Stoudamire. It'll be very difficult for him make the rosterStoudamire's situation worsened a bit Wednesday morning when his right groin tightened after he had gone through most of the practice session.

Antonio Maceiras, He needs to stay in Europe scouting. Its what we paid him for.
I think Monroe assumes people know Ginobili wouldn't be going.
It literally goes without saying...
...that is, unless, Manu, Fab and Luis are going to hang out a bit while they are in H-town.
Every time I hear Ian is out it makes me furious.

seriously why doesnt pop leave the beard till after cmas so he can play santa....and make millions, upon millions of spurs legions happy.....
i want for xmax, another championship
In fact, it SO goes without saying, that I didn't know who BC was referring to.
Yeah it's unfortunate for him. I was hoping he'd make the team.
yeah I too like salim and hope they don't give up on him too quickly he would Imo work great in the spurs system
I think Manu's planning on traveling with the team.
It's funny, those are 3 of the players I was hoping to see!
Spurs training camp will end in two and a half weeks. If Stoudamire's injury is serious, he could miss the whole training camp.
However, I don't think it means that he is done for sure with Spurs. In fact, it will depend on his contract :
- If his contract becomes fully guaranteed at the end of the training camp, he will be waived.
- If his contract doesn't become more guaranteed at the end of the training camp, he has a shot to be kept. If Farmer, Hairston and Green aren't good, I can see Spurs keeping Stoudamire to evaluate him in November.
I'm not that worried about checking out Salim. Getting a good look at Hill, Mason and Tolliver is much higher on my priority list.
I think Tolliver may very well be the hidden gem of the roster.
Spurs gotta give Stoudamire a real chance. We can always use deadly shooters like him in the Spurs system.
I DO NOT want the Spurs giving up on him if he is injured and can't show his stuff in training camp and preseason. What would the Spurs have done if they gave up on Speedy Claxton in 2003 and not given him a chance to get into the rotation. Sure it's a different situation, but what I am saying in the rewards could be just as big.
Also, like Bruno said if the contact in not fully guaranteed until later in the year then just keep Stoudamire so he can show his stuff then cut him later if it doesn't work out.
As much trouble as the Spurs had in generating offense last season, they had better take a chance or two on a prover shooter like Stoudamire.
The only downer for me is Ian, I was looking forward to Hill, Tolliver, and Mason almost and much. Seeing guys like Farmar for the first time would be nice too.
Would have liked to see Salim and Ian play. Oh well.
Advice for Spurs fans.
Watch the players, watch what they do.
Don't give a crap about if they win or not.
Its exhibition, keep it cool guys![]()
Indeed. These games are about individual analysis. There are a lot of questions on our roster right now. We have both players we have brought into camp and players under contract that have questions surrounding them. If we get smashed I'm sure we will hear the usual stupidity from our resident trolls...but as you said, winning or losing matters little. What matters is trying to figure out which guys we can depend on to be the pieces that we need to push this team up and beyond the other teams in the West that have solidified themselves.
That should be the ultimate "it goes without saying" statement or at least it shoiuld anyways![]()
