    Final: Hornets 89, Spurs 84
    MySanAntonio.com - SPURS-HORNETS GAME BLOG

    FOURTH QUARTER

The Spurs' Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Michael Finley all looked solid early and sat out the second half of Friday's 89-84 preseason loss to the New Orleans Hornets at the AT&T Center.

For the second straight night, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich gave the bulk of the playing time to a group of rookies, young players and newcomers.

Spurs rookie point guard George Hill got some experience playing with his veteran teammates in the first half. Center Anthony Tolliver showed aggressiveness going for rebounds against established NBA players and Desmon Farmer hit some 3-pointers down the stretch.

The young Spurs got a chance to learn the hard way in the second half - going head to head with New Orleans' top players. The Hornets starters put together a 16-7 run to start the second half.

Duncan had 12 points and three rebounds in less than 18 minutes. Parker had 10 points and three assists and Final had eight points including two 3-pointers.

Veteran point guard Jacque Vaughn ran the Spurs' offense for a long stretch in the second half. Vaughn went down hard in Thursday's game when he took a charge. Against the Hornets, he drew two more charges when Chris Paul ran through him.

THIRD QUARTER: SPURS SUBS VS. HORNETS STARTERS

The Hornets kept their starters in against a bunch of Spurs trying to make the team. As a result, the Hornets finished the third quarter with a 69-60 lead.

The Spurs' veterans might be done at halftime. They opened the second half with George Hill, Roger Mason Jr., Malik Hairston and Darryl Watkins. Matt Bonner was the only starter back out on the floor. Those five went up against the Hornets' starters.

Watkins got the crowd's attention with a block that sent a Hornets shot into the stands.

Farmer's the one I think has some real skills. Good game from him. I want to see Pop give him more court time and the green light to see what he can really do.

Rookie impressive, but Spurs fall again
    Hornets 89, Spurs 84
    Jeff McDonald - Express-News

George Hill was a senior at IUPUI five months ago, when the Spurs and New Orleans Hornets engaged in a seven-game showdown in the Western Conference semifinals.

Thrown into the fray early in Friday night's preseason rematch at the AT&T Center, Hill wasted little time showing he belonged. Two seconds into his first-quarter appearance, Hill found himself between New Orleans point guard Chris Paul and the basket with the shot clock winding down. The rookie forced the All-Star to miss.

The Spurs lost the game 89-84, falling for the second night in a row, but left the building encouraged about the progress of their first-round draft pick.

Before the game, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich unveiled his plan to throw Hill into the fire.

“He can watch Chris go by him,” Popovich said, “and then try to figure out what do.”

It didn't take Hill long to come up with an answer.

In his first 3:05 upon entering the game in the first quarter, the rookie point guard twice defended Paul into misses, drew a foul with a hard drive to the hoop and buried a 3-pointer.

He finished with 10 points in 14 minutes. More than that, he impressed with his poise.

Tim Duncan scored 12 points in his preseason debut.

Watkins seemed especially impressive tonight. I'm high on this guy based on what people said he did last night and what I saw today.

Hes obviously a turnover machine right now. But I think coaching could fix a lot of that.

a lot of the doubt and worries that I had about the rooks coming into the preseason are slowly fading.

I understand that its the preseason and that its only two "games" but I'm pretty damn impressed. Whether this translates into the regular season and beyond I'm not sure, but the young ones are really working hard and showing their stuff.

So if Hill is a good draft pick, will the Pop and Buford haters say they were wrong?

    More than likely not.

I have nothing against Hill. It's just that I preferred Nick Batum. However, if Hill turns out to be a solid contributor, I'll be the first to man up and give Pop and RC their props. For now, I'm just glad they came back to America to make their 1st round pick.

Didn't Batum get drafted before Hill?
