Maybe they screen the audience first. They put you in a room and ask you to yell like your va jay jay is on fire.
Many shows pump up the crowd durring station breaks.
2 minutes before Oprah airs..........
"ok people we are almost live make sure you sound excited!"

To warm up the audience before the show they come out with a big key chain of car keys and shake them around.
With today's economy they need to come out with some gas cans to get people excited.
