One of these days, we'll just punch our destination into the computers running our cars and the state will tell us how much we'll have to pay them to get there.

About 2 weeks ago the Pro Toll Road Thieves (neatly called the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority) lost a court case over an environmental study issue of Hwy 281 which effectively prevents them from proceeding with any further toll work on Hwy 281. They will have to do and complete a new study which takes 4-5 years and cost a lot of money. Yesterday the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority met and wants to get TxDot to allow them to do a new study and for TXDot to pay for it.
Now get this: They also want TxDot to approve AND pay for environmental studies for IH-35 (Northeast side) and Loop 1604 (NW side--from IH-10 to Hwy 90). Apparently the toll road thieves want to toll IH-35 from Loop 410 out to the Comal County line. The last time I looked that section of IH-35 was an existing paid for, nice, wide, modern, FREEway. Further, 1604 from IH-10 is a nice modern, recently completed FREEway to Bandera Road. It is past Bandera, like 281 is, and TxDot refuses to build three over passes there also.
The thieves want to tear down these existing roads and rebuild them into toll roads (the highway contractors make a killing doing that)….and then turn it over to a company that runs the toll roads (lots of money in that).
The people in charge of Alamo Regional Mobility Authority are well known connected individuals. Terry Brechtel is the former City Manager who makes a nice stool for the powers behind the scenes. Bill Thornton is the former mayor (and dentist) is also is connected with the wealthy elite (lawyers, engineers, contractors, etc) who stand to make millions off of toll roads.
Have you noticed that there is no mention of tolling highways on the southside??? I guess people “that live in Stone Oak houses valued at $500K and who make $300K per household should pay for these roads.” It is only “fair”.
Can you imagine-----the money TxDot will allocate and has allocated for these environmental studies could have already paid for those three overpasses on 281----and I would imagine those three overpasses on 1604 at Braun, Gilbeau and Shanefield.
One thought: Why do we even need TxDot anymore? I mean if they are readily volunteering giving up their power to build roads to en ies like Alamo Regional Mobility Authority, then why isn’t TxDot scaled way down to just a maintenance dept?

Toll Roads = good
toll roads on already paid for and built highways = Bad
Thank you for knowing that Rick Perry and his associates are at the root of this sudden toll road frenzy. Not many people are aware of that.
But what they are really licking thir chops at is the construction of the Texas Trans Corridor Highway-----now that is where fortunes will be made!!!!
Right. I don't have a problem with the toll roads they built here in Austin because they are pretty much all new. I get cheesed when they start talking about tolling 183 to the airport or 290 west and east of town.
