NBA 2k9, CoD4 or 5. Those two come to mind. If you are into hockey, I hear that NHL 09 is like the greatest hockey game ever.
I just have one game (NCAA 09)- what are some good games to check out? I'm into sports and shooting stuff- not really into pretending to rock out and D&D

Yes as well as online play which is free with the ps3. I concur, Get COD 4, no matter what do not get COD 5.
Another couple games to look at would be Metal Gear Solid 4 and The Orange Box, but nothing will really touch COD 4 so it should be your first priority.

Call of Duty is traditionally a WWII franchise, but COD 4 brought the game into the modern era. All the weaponry/scopes/upgrades in the game are based on real-world 21st century technology. COD 5 is taking it back to the WWII era which means older, slower guns and gear.
More importantly, COD 2 and 4 were developed by Infinity Ward who did an excellent job with both. COD 3 was developed by the same company who did the forthcoming COD 5 (Treyarch) and it was awful. I've read some early reviews of COD 5 and basically they said it wasn't anything special. Infinity Ward is working on COD 6 to be released next year and until that comes out COD 4 will be the superior game.

COD3 was ok on maps and gametypes without vehicles, and was overall a very solid game. COD 5 will most likely be pretty good too. However, COD4 is arguably one of the 10 greatest games ever created. Infinity Ward is an incredibly talented developer, and COD4 delivers on so many levels.
1) Online play is spectacular. The control is amazing, the weapons are cool, there's a great leveling system, and it just an all-around fun game online.
2) The campaign is equally great. It has an excellent storyline, and three absolutely unforgettable missions (I don't want to tell you what they are so as to spoil the surprise, but you'll know them when you do them).
3) The graphics are unreal. The lighting, the colors, the 3d-modeling and texturing... this game is really something to look at in HD. It honestly looks a couple of years ahead of its time. On the X360 the frame rates are great too.
Basically, COD4 is a game you absolutely cannot miss if you like shooters even a little bit. I'd be shocked if we see anything as good as COD4 come out this year. This is an absolutely legendary game, and is undoubtedly the best game on PS3 (since you don't have Bioshock).

The release got delayed, but I've played the beta on a friend's console and it's definitely a must-buy.
