Anybody want to do the world a favor and find out where that XP_antispyware comes from? I would be glad to donate to the fund to do some strategic demolition. I'm trying to wipe it off a friend's computer right now. I think this is the 4th or 5th time I've been asked to deal with this problem.
Great I was seconds away from posting a thread about removing existing viruses. I just picked up Nortons and the sales lady was "thats not going to get rid of your problem". I thought that was the whole point of the virus removal? Figuring she was upselling me to death.
That XP antispyware has rendered my computer nearly useless.
Generally, I've got to run about 3 different programs at a time to get rid of it, as well as deleting files and editing the registry. Can't we get Bill Gates to foot the bill for a small ninja army to get the guys behind this stuff?
I just got done reading up on all the deleting of I need to do. This is probably more work than I'm capable of but I'll have fun destroying my computer in the process.
As it stands right now this virus pops windows up so quick I can't download any programs. From the internet or from a CD.
AVG appears to have killed it pretty good.
make sure you are in safe mode when doing all of your deleting/registry , it wont have a chance to startup
I actually can't find any any entries anywhere. I've gone down the lists of whats to be deleted and its simply not there. I'm guessing its hiding somewhere under a new name and I'm too scared to start deleting a bunch of stuff I'm unsure of. Norton deleted a bunch of issues in safe mode but there is one Trojan left and it can't or won't delete it. I eliminated the pop ups but its still dreadfully slow almost too slow to accomplish anything. I'm hoping I can get online just long enough to download AVG. It took 9 minutes for my homepage to load and that wasn't quick enough. Before I knew it the virus or whatever it is managed to come back. So back to square one.

Well Norton eliminated enough for me to get online and download AVG which cleaned the rest of it out. I know I'm supposed to have two virus programs but at this point it because it worked.
Why would anybody use Norton at this point in computer history is beyond me. That thing is bloatware if I've seen one.
If thats the case then is AVG enough or should I be using something else?
AVG has worked pretty well for me here. I remember an issue or two with updates, but it's nowhere near as intrusive as Norton. If you also use Norton's firewall, then you will need a separate firewall program (if you don't think the built in one is good enough for you).
I just use Nortons antivirus and AVG's antivirus. I don't have a seperate firewall other than the one used by microsoft windows. I thought about using ZoneAlarm but haven't yet.
avast works the best
install it
then tell it not to restart the computer
update it
then run it
I then run spybot cc cleaner on it
then remove avast and put in avg
fixed 20-30 computers last month like that
one virus program per computer
you can use more spywhere removal programs then that though

I have Norton and AVG both on. Why is it bad to have 2 on at the same time.
Because they're both using resources to do the same thing. Norton is specially burdensome on the system. So you're basically wasting processor power in redundant protection. So when you start wondering 'why my computer is so slow?', then that would be a reason why.
Ok I'll turn Norton off but keep it on the computer in case I need it for something. Thanks friendo.
Well, if you're going to keep it, then might as well keep it on. It's either you take it off or you don't. Turning on/off the enable switch doesn't really save you anything.
Then again, if you feel Norton is working for you and you don't think it's slowing down your system, then do as you please.
