The Lakers and Andrew Bynum have agreed in principle on a four-year contract extension worth about $58 million, keeping their center of the future in the fold through the 2012-13 season, according to sources familiar with the negotiations who would not speak publicly.

Bynum, who will make $2.8 million this season, will earn close to $42 million over the first three years of his contract extension. The fourth year will be a team option for about $16 million.

The Lakers declined to comment, although an announcement could come as early as this afternoon.
    Nice deal for both sides.

    No money for LeBron though.

Smart move by David Lee. Realizing Bynum wasn't going to put up 20/10, there probably aren't that many teams that were going to offer much more, and that the Lakers have the right to match anyway, it's the right thing to secure a huge contract right now, while leaving it short enough to get a max contract when Bynum is still very much young and in his prime in four years.

I'm a little surprised, but it's nice to see a slimey sports agent do the right thing.

great deal for both parties. if bynum gets injury prone, lakers can get out of it in 3 years at 42 mil.

if bogut is worth 10 mil, i think drew at 14 isnt bad

Very nice....maybe now he can settle down and play the game. It must be tough for a young guy dealing with a huge contract knowing that 1 injury can you up and your future. Hopefully he plays more loose now.

The Lakers will be close to 80 million in payroll next year with only 8 players.

One of those players is NOT Lamar Odom. Can they really afford to keep this guy or even trade for someone with a similar salary?

IF the Lakers win the Championship, they'll pay to keep Lamar. I think the $14 million a year was corrected to $11 million. I think he's definitely worth $10 million or so.

His role is vital on the team. A chemistry guy and the leader of the Minute Men.

Lamar doesn't finish but he's usually in almost any play if he's on the court.

Plus he's needed to balance off the intensity of Kobe for team chemistry.

$14 million per is a lot, but with only 3 years guaranteed it's not too bad a gamble.

No way LA keeps Odom unless they find a sucker to take Radmanovic and Walton's K for nothing - which isn't happening.

They will re-sign Ariza at 5 mil or so per and fill the rest with minimum guys. LO and Mihm are gone.

LO is a luxury they won't be able to afford, especially with Farmar's extension coming up.

Kobe needs to be re-signed to a 5year max deal after this season
Ariza needs to be re-signed after this season

No way in will we have a backup pf for 10mil per year.. Odom is on his way out buddy.

At 11 million, that would put the Lakers at 90-91 million with only nine guys. If they re-sign Ariza for another 5, that's obviously 95.

If the Luxury tax is at 70 million next year, The Lakers will be paying 120 million dollars for only ten players.

Lamar's a team guy but I doubt he'd go for less than $10 million so you guys might be right, he might be gone next year.

Which is disappointing so I'm hoping they work it out somehow or Buss bites the bullet and goes heavy into Luxury for a championship team.

i think they let him go in the offseason. now if they can get a sucker to take walton's deal along with odom's expiring contract, i can see the lakers making a mid season trade but if they play like they have the past 2 nights, no way u mess up the chemistry. lets not forget Farmar who will get a nice 5 mil per year deal also. mihm is gone, odoms gone.

given the lakers depth, i think they will still be fine without LO.

next year 5 would be fish kobe ariza pau bynum. off the bench, farmar, sasha, vlad, luke, powell and mbenga. they will get a rookie prolly draft a big man. also sun yue should be on the big team next year.

    im not envious

i just think the lakers shouldve waited till next season since they hold all the cards in this deal.

14 mil/yr for 35 games of showcase seems a lot imo.

while i agree, i think bynum inking a deal will let him play relaxed and without pressure this year. his knee injury could have happend to anyone landing on someones foot.

if anything is true, the nba pays based on potential more than any other sport. (maybe nfl rookie contracts). if kwame made 9 mil i think bynum at 14 isnt too bad of a gamble even if its based on 35 games
