Hey Slomo, do you have Fasching in Slovenia? We used to do that when I lived in Luxembourg...if I remember correctly, it's in February?

Yes they do. Donuts (without the hole) are the traditional sweet to give, but kids prefer sweets of all sorts. They're several carnivals over the weekend and general stupid (drunken) behavior for a few days, it's quite nice. The idea is to celebrate the end of winter and the imminent arrival of Spring.
One of the nicest carnivals is in Venice and since its just a 2,5 hours drive from here, we go to see it every few years. It gets so crowdy that they have policemen regulate pedestrian traffic at intersections.
