I like Luby's but it really isn't worth the price. I still go from time to time though.
The last time I went to Luby's was good for me. Food was okay. There was some guy playing a baby grand piano so loud you couldn't have a conversation. But my 10 yr old entered the "Luby's Spurs Ball Kid" contest while we were there and he won! He got a bunch of Spurs prizes, and we got 4 great lower level (7th row) seats to the Spurs-Lakers game. And I've got some kickass photos of him walking onto center court to present the game ball, with Kobe standing in the background! He also got to stand out there and high five the Spurs as they came out of the tunnel.
Why does nothing cool ever happen to me? One time I got the cold shoulder by Devean ing George in the mall.
Which store was he working at?
Lol. I was in the south Bay Galleria in Hawthorne, and I saw him. I was staring at him, and he saw me and looked away. I was pissed. Was the summer he left, too. He goes to crappy areas so people can stare at him.
Was it the Luby's by the Vineyard? There is an old dude that plays there and wears stupid hats
That's the place.
Yeah I used to live by there. My mom likes Luby's so when she came to town we would go there.
Luby's has REALLY gone downhill since Pappas bought them. First they did away with the steam tables on the serving line and went to heat lamps so the food is dried out and cold. Portions are smaller and cost more. There are several sit down restaurants like the Black Eyed Pea that give a much better value for the dollar along with full service...
Pappas doesn't really give a about Luby's. They just bought them when the stock was super cheap as a real estate play. They are just keeping them open for the income on the property kind of like why people put up mini-storages on investment property till the land gets sold for big bucks for the new shopping mall...
the only Luby's worth going to now is the one on Walzem rd where they offer all you can eat. At least I think they still got it going from when I use to live out that way. Man, they had everything. You went in like usual, went through the line and then when you sat down and wanted more to eat, you just told your waiter/waitress that you wanted more food and they'd bring you back what you asked for without you having to get up. Man do I miss that. Only thing that comes close to that now is Furrs Cafeteria up the road in San Marcos where they always have all you can eat.
That's where we went.
I didn't see old man at the baby grand. In fact, Ive been a few times in the last couple of years and haven't seen him.
I think his pay was that he got his meal for half off, so he had to quit because he couldn't afford to work there any more.
might as well cross the street and go to Stonewerks for those prices
I ate there a couple of weeks ago with my wife and kid.............Kids meals are no longer free on Sunday either........well, my bill came to $42! I was like WTF? These were Luianne platters with only a desert.
One thing I hate about Luby's now is their menu changed. They used to serve cafateria style food.......beef tip with gravy poured over rice, enchiladas, cheese steaks, twice cooked potatoes...........now they have this designer food....... chicken with harmalaid sauce and augraten potatoes with roasted huckleberry nuts.....I didnt go to Luby's for that !
I ate there a few times when I first moved down to SA because everyone talked about it and I did like the food but realized the nickel and diming for every item was costly and I stopped going.
When I was at Ed White, (back when dinosaurs roamed the earf), the assistant band director was a giant bag named Skip Wenglein. Dude was very proud of the fact that he was the son of the owner (at the time) of Luby's.
A few years ago, bag Wenglein got popped for having a PC full of kiddie pr0n. Knowing he was about to go into the big house, where he was going to be assraped for the next 20 years, bag tried to ventilate his gray matter, but instead of offing himself, he turned himself into a vegetable. His lawyers tried to argue that bag shouldn't be assraped because he was confined to a wheelchair. I think he's being bent over by his cellmate as we speak.

Go through the drive-thru and order a kid's meal- they do not care if you are an adult.
I've never done the drive-thru. Do they try to guilt-trip tips out of people there too?
Bland food for bland people. Pass.
