Before you get all ty with me I didn't write this but I do find it very interesting.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has signed on to an Army Reserve program in which the company and the Army will work together to recruit and train people interested in serving in the military and working for the giant retailer.

Wal-Mart, the world's largest private employer, has more than 1.4 million US employees.

An agreement signed yesterday obligates Wal-Mart to interview and consider all qualified, participating soldiers for employment after they complete military occupational specialty training.

When a reserve soldier who works at Wal-Mart is called to service, the company can draw on 1 million or so citizen soldiers to help identify a qualified replacement to work in the soldier's place.

The arrangement is expected to lower costs of recruiting and training for Wal-Mart.
Its about the purposeful manipulation of the economy in order to increase recruitment into the military. The US gov needs fresh young minds and bodies to be fodder for the next war of expansion, and since the number of volunteers is at an all time low they now have to get crafty as to how to draw in new recruits.

Its already difficult economically for young lower and middle class kids to make a living so military service is a good last resort option compared to unemployment and starvation.

Now the evil empire Wal Mart is taking the same poor kids who are working for slave wages and no health benefits and creating a fast track into military servitude. Then after they have been in the military and managed to survive they can come right back to good old Wal Mart to work for peanuts and no health insurance once again.

See a trend here? The same young people get exploited again and again and there is always a steady stream of low paid, expendable "employees" who will work for nothing and do what they are told.

I couldn't say which would be worse: working in a war zone or a wal-mart.

It is just a matter of time before Wal-Marts have medical clinics or maybe they already do.
One stop shopping to the extreme.

I was thinking more like trapping hard working people in a sub par job with military recruiting efforts to boot.

Its like offering someone who's down on their luck or better yet an up and comer a future in the military with an even bigger future in Wal-Mart. Basically they're glamorizing a relatively ty job with no benefits by dumping a bunch of military salt and pepper over it to make it presentable. It just happens to be a somewhat ciclical trap of worthlessness.

Get them when they need us most.

They're banking on that. Only you'll be back at Wal-Mart when you return....only to want to go right back in the Military.

Fair enough, but I don't see it any differently than having army recruiting offices in the middle of every ty neighborhood and strip mall like they do now.

Well its not drastically different but it centralizes the effort in a pattern that almost ensures you'll be locked in either via the military or Wal-mart. I guess I consider it a form of entrapment. The military used to open doors in many areas now they've decided to put a leash on the door opening in hopes of you becoming a long term investment for them...with the alternative being Wal-Mart or another ty job. You're almost certain to maintain you military pay.

Why would anyone go back to Wal-mart? Unless of course they put you in their management advancement program?

The Military is no different than any other job as far as you get out of it what you put in. Most of my Marine Corps brothers who've retired military are doing very well....very well.

Exactly. You'll be right there and ready to get back in. Thats the point. Instead of broadening the horizon it shrinks it so you go back as the lesser of two evils. I'm not totally knocking the military as a viable career either. I'm just pointing the change in long term purpose from what it used to be to what its becoming.

if you be a dumb ass about your time i nthe service then yes you deserve to be back at wally mart...but if you try to get a decent MOS that can be used on th outside when you get out then theres some upside, not only that but if you do end up back at wall mart hopefully you invested in the gi bill and now can get paid to go to school...its a win win if you want it to be.... you could even go be a tanker get out and drive an 18 wheeler for wall mart...atleast its an upgrade

You can't possibly think the people applying for jobs at Wal-Mart are savvy enough to figure out how to break the cycle and put their military time to good use. most of the people who go to college are unable to put their education to good use.

Some will understand how to use their military experience to their advantage but I agree that having a college degree doesn't always lead to making good decisions.

I sort of agree with people that say that since the lower class is sending their kids off to fight wars which benefit the businesses the rich operate, it is fair to tax the rich as much as we do

I've done both. I actually joined the military right after working at Wal-Mart. Oh, the life of a southern boy from Georgia
