I get that the FO wants to unload enough salaries to resign Manu & possibly extend Tony. After that-- what? I don't think any of the BIG names are coming here because we can't afford two 20 million plus players. Bosh, Wade and James ain't coming. What's left over in FA? Why not continue to improve this year and next as long as we can keep Manu & Tony? Tiago Splitter would be a great addition at a lot less $$? Buy out his damn contract from Tau! Assuming that we don't win it all this year[ which I don't], is the plan to just hang around till 2010 to retool?

not that im an advicate of the 2010 plan (im not), but for the sake of argument, what would you have the spurs do with their team over the next two season? we only have the MLE to offer FAs (and we are getting closer to the tax line). and we have almost no assets to move in trades. so what should we do in the next two seasons?

    1) sign a FA
    2) pick up "dumped" contracts in 2009 (Mo Almond situations)
    3) pick up "dumped" draft picks in 2009
    4) get in on big 3 or 4 way trades that may allow you to do 2 and 3 in 2010.

Tim is extended, Tony is under contract until 2011. Hill and Ian are still on rookie deals. They're good. Extend a 33 YO Manu for 2-3 years at MLE prices, sign Mase, fill out the roster.

I would be shocked (and thrilled) if Manu signs for MLE money. I guess it depends on how he does when he is back. But even then I would expect him to get at least what he is getting now. If they Spurs can talk him into taking MLE money, I would be so impressed by Manu.

I don't think the 2010 focuses on the big name free agents. The Spurs will try and bring in who they can to visit to present the charade to the fans.

Realistically, they'll go out and try and sign 3-4 guys that are on the second tier to come in and play with Tony at that point (let's face it, Tim will be about done). And just like before, they'll have all that cap room and end up overpaying the market value for the acquisitions they make.

More than the MLE? Yes, that would be overpaying. He'll be 33, and that's usually the beginning of the downward spiral for SGs. Think of him as a better than usual version of veteran guards we usually bring in.

I think they let Manu go after his contract is up. I know he'll be older and somewhat declining but I think he can still contribute to some team and with him getting a better jumpshot and 3 point shooting he should still be useful.

Think of how he's going to perform on the back end of the contract, the expensive years, when he's like 36 or 37.

If he want's too much, then yes. If he's willing to go MLE or a bit lower, then you bring him back. It's like a Finley or Barry deal, without wondering if he's a fit in the system.

If he wants to test the market, I think he will get more offers than the MLE. But if they can lock him up before he hits FA, then that would be good. I have no idea what the Spurs FO is thinking, especially after hearing TP say this is the last year with the "core".

The interpretation on that one is still up in the air.

I doubt it. Manu will end his career as a Spur.

manu deserves at least the full MLE. as for the 2010 plan, it should be lebron james or bust. if lebron is serious about winning championships, a core of duncan, parker, lebron, +ginobili is unstoppable. lebron wants to win, so try to name one other team with enough cap space to sign him that can offer a better core. he might go to a bigger market team, but the spurs gives him the best chance of winning.

Considering the fact Manu has been underpaid the past 4 years, I expect Manu to be rewarded with an extension for at least 10-11 million per year.

People thought Tim was done 2 years ago. The way Tim doesn't rely on his athletism, I could see Tim being just as effective til hes 37. That is if he wants to.

What wrong with the intent of this plan? Thinking that the way in which you build, replenish and reload your team is through free agency. Look at our core Big Three players. Were any of them signed via free agency? No. Free Agency is a good strategy for adding complimentary players. However STARS must be drafted and developed from within. Something the Spurs haven't done since 2001.

The 2010 plan will depend on what happens the rest of this season. If Manu comes back like Manu, I expect he to be extended for two years and between $20-25M total. If RMJ keeps it up, you have to put aside some money for him. Same with Mahinmi.

But if Manu comes back hobbled, RMJ comes back down to earth and Mahinmi never materializes, I could see the Spurs letting all three walk and blowing it up.

The 2008 plan was extended to the 2010 plan after the Spurs won the 2007 championship. Let's hope the Spurs decide to extend it a few more years after another deep run. Building around Duncan, Manu, TP, RMJ, Hill and Mahinmi from 2010 forward may be the way to go. That has a chance to be more than enough talent if all six of those players stay healthy and play as well as possible.

LeBron wants to be the #1 guy on a team that wins a championship. He doesn't want to road the coattails of a championship team. He will still only be 25 years old and he's going to want to continue to score 30 ppg. The Spurs is not a realistic possibility at all. He's staying in Cleveland or going to New York. Those are the only two options.

Have Manu come back, if he plays well and you can get a talented young big like Aldridge or Oden(huge long shot, probably untouchable), then you do it.
