Why? It's what they call the school. If he went to Virginia would you get annoyed at Wahoo-wah?

Well no...not too many people around here actually call it that.

Spurs 94, Grizzlies 81: Manu returns

    FOURTH QUARTER: GINOBILI'S RETURN SUCCESSFUL

Manu Ginobili played 11 minutes and scored 12 points in his first NBA game since last season as the Spurs beat the Memphis Grizzlies 94-81 Monday.

Ginobili had been sidelined since injuring his ankle just over three months ago in the Olympics and having surgery. He made his first two shots and was 3 of 4 from the field including 1 of 2 from 3-point range. He was 5 of 6 on free throws, grabbed four rebounds and had one assist. He sat out the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies made a late run and cut the Spurs lead to 11 points with under three minutes left. Duncan returned to the floor to help wrap it up.

It looks like the Spurs have this one in the bag, leading by 18 points with just under six minutes left. The Grizzlies scored 19 points in the entire third quarter. The Spurs lead 84-66.

The bench is providing the Spurs' scoring early in the fourth quarter. Matt Bonner hit a pair of baskets, Michael Finley made a shot.

Jacque Vaughn made his first appearance of the game with 10:15 left. He made a driving basket that put the Spurs in front 81-62.

    THIRD QUARTER: GINOBILI SPARKS RUN

Manu Ginobili had six points in a 9-2 Spurs run that helped them take a 72-55 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Spurs finished the quarter with a 16-4 run. Roger Mason Jr. has hit five 3-pointers and leads the Spurs with 17 points. George Hill has 16 points.

Ginobili is breaking down the Grizzlies' half-court defense in the third quarter. He has seven points in a stretch of about three minutes, hitting 5 of 6 free throws.

Another vintage Ginobili move - with 4:21 left in the third quarter he dribbled right through the heart of the Grizzlies defense and drew a foul as he went up. He didn't get his shot to drop, but made both free throws. Next time down he drove left around his defender and made his shot.

As he did the first and second quarters, Ginobili came off the bench about midway through the third quarter. A little more than 10 seconds later he got the ball and drew a foul. He made one of this two free throws and the Spurs led 50-46. The next possession he made a pass ahead to George Hill on a fast break. Hill drew a foul and made both free throws.

Bruce Bowen hit a 3-pointer for his first points of the game. The Spurs lead 49-46 midway through the third quarter.

Ginobili was on the bench to start the second half. Roger Mason had the Spurs' first basket of the half and has 11 points.

HOW DOES MANU CHANGE THE ROTATION?

Someone will lose playing time with Manu Ginobili back. Ginobili and Roger Mason Jr. primarily play at the same spot and Mason has been playing well. Michael Finley also plays some there. On the other hand, that makes it easier for Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to avoid overworking any of those players over the course of the season.

More minutes will go to Tony Parker when he returns. With Parker and George Hill at point guard, Mason now getting action at that spot and Ginobili capable of playing point, you wonder if Jacque Vaughn sees his playing time evaporate. Vaughn didn't play Friday against Utah and didn't see action in the first half tonight.

Could the situation trickle up to the small forward spot? If the Spurs go with three-guard lineups, you wonder if Finley, Bruce Bowen or Ime Udoka find their game time shrink a little.

Tonight, young guard Blake Ahearn found himself inactive and watching from the sidelines wearing a sportcoat.

    SECOND QUARTER

Tim Duncan had 12 points and Manu Ginobili came off the bench and recorded five points and four rebounds as the Spurs took a 41-36 halftime lead.

The Grizzlies are trying to pick up the tempo and are getting some baskets. The cut what had been 10-point Spurs lead down to 36-33.

After playing not quite six minutes of the first quarter, Ginobili returned to the floor with 7:36 left in the second quarter. He sat back down with 5:13 left in the half.

Roger Mason Jr. has nine points on three 3-pointers and Tim Duncan has eight points. The Spurs lead 32-23 midway through the second quarter.

FIRST QUARTER: GINOBILI MAKES FIRST APPEARANCE

Manu Ginobili played about five minutes off the bench in the first quarter of his return. He made both of his field-goal attempts - a 3-pointer and a dunk - for five points, two rebounds and an assist.

The Spurs finished the first quarter with a 22-17 lead.

Ginobili had two baskets, one rebound and one assist in his first three minutes of action. His second basket came when he cut through the lane and took a pass from Fabricio Oberto - finishing with a one-handed dunk.

Ginobili hit his first shot - a 3-pointer with 4:06 left in the first quarter. The Spurs lead 17-12.

The first time Ginobili did something that won't show up in the box, but it looked like the old Manu. He got the ball on the left side at the 3-point line. He faked his defender and drove to the baseline, pitching the ball out to Bruce Bowen for a 3-point shot that didn't go in.

The Spurs called timeout with a 12-10 lead with 5:34 left in the first quarter. Ginobili entered the game when action resumed.

Roger Mason Jr., who the Spurs have been counting on for offense while Ginobili was out, hit two early 3-pointers.

PREGAME: GINOBILI WILL COME OFF THE BENCH

Spurs starters: Roger Mason Jr., Michael Finley, Bruce Bowen, Tim Duncan and Fabricio Oberto. This is Mason's second straight start at point guard.

The cavalry is on the way. Manu Ginobili is in uniform tonight as the Spurs take on the Grizzlies in Memphis. See what Jeff McDonald says about Manu Ginobili

This is Ginobili's first game action since Aug. 22, when he was playing for Argentina against the United States in the Olympics in Beijing.

As beat up as the Spurs have been, they have will won four of their last five games with both Ginobili and Tony Parker and the sidelines with injuries.

The Spurs are coming off a 119-94 victory over Utah on Friday. The next night, the Jazz beat Memphis 103-94 in Memphis.

Having the possibillity of 5 dribble penetrators in at the same time is an exciting thought
