I wanted to say thank you for your contributions on purchasing an automobile. My husband and I have always been the couple that car salesmen love to see walk in the door with the "sucker" tattooed on our foreheads. Thanks to you "How not to get hosed when buying a car" thread, I employed many of the techniques you mentioned. The scripts were particularly helpful. My husband was silent the whole time and let me do the talking since I was the one who did all the research on the car.
The used car in question was originally priced at $16K ( the same car at other dealers in a 50 mi radius runs $17500 - 19K) then today I noticed online the this dealership had lowered it to $14,500. So I ran the Carfax report and everything came up fine & it qualified for the Carfax Buy Back Program.
We head to the dealership and here is how it went....
Me: After driving the car, I asked the salesman what his rock bottom price was. He went inside to talk to Mr. Sales Manager.
Him: Then, I get "sorry but $14,500 was the rock bottom price because we have already lowered the price $1,500 and this car is a loss leader, blah, blah, blah..."
Me: That's when I started your technique. " Okay, but what is the total drive out price for this car." Off he goes again and comes back a few minutes later.
Him: "I'm sorry 2Blonde, but $16K is our drive-out-price. My manager says that the best we can do."
Me: "Well I can't go over $15K total drive-out-price."
Him: "Let me go talk to him again"
Him: "Okay I got him to come down $200 to $15,800."
Me: "Nope, that won't work. $15K is the top limit of our budget, but thank you."
Him: "Let try one more time."
Me: "Okay"
Him: "He was able to squeeze it down to $15,400. Do we have a deal?"
Me: I did my best disappointed look and said "thank for trying but we just won't go more than $15K out the door."
Him: "Why don't you leave me your name and cellphone information, just in case."
Okay, so I fill the contact card out all the while talking, somewhat loudly, to my husband about the other cars we have lined up to check out after we leave there.
Mr. Sales Manager: "Hi, I'm Billy Joe Bob and I just want you to know that we aren't trying to be difficult but as you can see (he holds out computer printout) we are already losing $800 at $15,400."
Me: "Thank you, I appreciate that but it's still over our budget." so I grab my purse and start looking for my keys.
Mr. Sales Manager: "Wait a second more please I want to try something." He comes back almost immediately with "I'm trying to weigh your offer vs the price of keeping this car in stock for another month" He then gives me his best, I'm-trying-so-hard, please-break-down-and-say-yes-look while I'm supposed to tell him it's only $400 difference. I say nothing and after an awkward pause he says "Okay, we'll take the $15K."
Me: "You do mean $15K drive-out-the-door price with no other expenses, taxes or fees?"
Mr. Sales Mgr: "Yes"
Me: "We have a deal then."
So we went back to the office where the salesman starts to talk to me about financing options. I decline and say we will be writing a check for car. So they did the papers and put the sales price down as 13,800 then added the tax & le fees and came up with my grand total of $15K.
