I think Howard has to be considered the best. Its hard to combine dominant rebounding with dominant shot blocking. Duncan still effects a of alot of shots without blocking them, in terms of positioning - but i would say Howard is the best.

Duncan and Howard are two of my favorites. But it's tough to choose between them. Howard is a great help defender, coming out to swat shots from nowhere. But he tends to have trouble against big-men who face to the basket (see Chris Bosh who gets the upper hand on him often). He also tends to get in foul trouble a lot, which means he's very eager, but not yet completely mature in his defensive mentality. Still, nobody can out rebound the guy, and as Ghazi mentioned, defensive rebounding is defense.

Duncan on the other hand is better than Howard man-to-man, and almost as good on help defense (not a spring chicken anymore though). He also is very disciplined when it comes to biting on fakes, and is still one of the best on the defensive boards.

I'd probably give it to Howard because of his freakish athletic ability. But I'd like to see some consistency out of him, and less foul trouble. He is making an effort though.

Yep. Though most of us Spurs fans dislike him intensely, he should be mentioned up there.

The best thing about Duncan is rarely gets into fo trouble. He has such good foot work, and length, that he blocks shots without jumping. Just get to position, plant his feet and stick his arms straight up.

Like you said Howard tries to block everything into the 5th row, which isnt necessarily a bad thing, but it does get him in foul trouble.

KG is up there, hes probably the best man to man defender of the three given his mobility, but Duncan and Howard are both superior help defenders.

    1. Howard
    2. Duncan
    3. Garnett

Sheed deserves a mention aswell, a prime Sheed was probably the best 1-on-1 big man defender in the entire league.

Right. I can't remember if Duncan mentioned it, but I don't think anyone has given Duncan headaches as much as Sheed has when it comes to defense, and that's saying something.

Duncan is not the best big man defender in the league. His one on one defense has slid to the point to where you cannot say that he is. Help defender, yes, one-on-one, no. He is still very good in both areas however.

Dwight Howard is a great rebounder and very good shot blocker. I don't think he's the best big man defender.

I still think it's between Duncan and KG. KG has better agility, better in pick-and-roll defense, and better face-up defender. Duncan is the better help defender and low post defender. I'd probably say KG, but it's a toss-up. It's definitely between those two to me.

Jermaine O'Neal of 4-5 years ago was up there as well. Rasheed is still solid but has declined considerably, and has never been a dominant rebounder or shot blocker. But, he was always very good to outstanding when it came to straight up, no help, low post defense and with playing the high pick-and-roll to hedge and recover.

Duncan had said it a few times. Rasheed's length bothers him, and they've played against each other for so many years that they know each other's game well.

I don't have quotes handy but I can come up with them if needed.

filling up the stat sheet is not defense

defense is when you hold the opposing player below there avgs or force them to have a bad game where they have no affect on the game

look at camby when he won dpoy and was expose in teh first round of the playoffs where duncan just dominated the nuggets

Tim Duncan is one of the best defensive big man in the league.so many good defensive big man,not sure who is the best.
I know the population of houston is pretty big, but most of the rockets fans are not houston citizens. No need to say more.
TD is among the best defenders of the league. The other "best defensive big man" include Camby, KG, Kaman or even your Hayes. However, except KG, has any other one won a championship ring? TD may not be as good as KG in individual defense, but TD is absolutely the best team defender who has helped his team win 4 les in the past decade. Ron Artest is a good defender but he has done no good defense after he joined houson and gave up fighting.
