I noticed you didn't say anything about Baker City.
Why should I. It's just a small rural city. Much like The Dalles, where I used to live.

And ROFL at WC telling ES he doesn't have a clue.
If you had any idea how idiotic his statement was...

Now I bet he was being sarcastic. If he believes any of what he said, he has allot to learn about Oregon.

You don't have a clue about what you're talking about, do you?

Portland used to be a far better city than it is now. It grew and prospered under conservatives in the past, and then it was Californicated. I remember Portland 40 years ago. So much has changed.
That's what I mean. Everyone knows that Portland has been in sharp economic decline for 40 years and that no value-adding professionals live there. That's why the city is so Democratic. They just want to live off the hard work done by the Republicans.

Nice generalization. Pure and simple here, WC.

The Republican base is the rural parts of the country. Fact.

Southern and rural states (Utah, Idaho, etc) typically vote Republican. Fact.

These same states receive more federal dollars than they contribute. Fact.

I have a hard time taking you serious on this. When you first brough it up, your numbers included Medicare. Have you considered these new items you post also include Social Security, and many retired people move to Red states?

My Uncles did. Arizona and Nevada. Lots of retired people move to Red states because they are tired of the blues.

Levels of federal spending are not all welfare, and that was where we started.

DarkReign, please don’t try to change the argument once started. That’s where I have my biggest problem with random.

When we started the ‘welfare’ dialog, this is what you said:
First off, thats complete bull . The majority of welfare recipients in this country reside in...

    duh duh duh

The rural South. Yes, Dixieland is populated by (to borrow Chris Rock) mayonnaise sandwich eating hillbillies who are as uneducated and worthless to society as any intercity wad.

Moreover, take a loooog look at which states receive the most federal aid per capita, which states rely on the government more than others and who spends the most per capita on social services (Medicaid and Welfare).

    All red states.
There are several reasons why this can be (Dixieland states.) There are larger segments of less qualified people for jobs, and probable more racism still in the south than other places. My initial take is that there are more people below the poverty levels than other states. A huge leftover from past racial practices. The implication I saw you bring in was that it was either republicans taking in the welfare, or the cause of the welfare state. I disagree with both those points.

You also speak then of per capita aid of social services. Medicare is largely given to seniors who through retirement, have earned it. I wouldn’t call all of it welfare. If you wish to argue the welfare aspect, then please keep it to what we consider actual welfare programs.

Then in your last post, you bring up state by state spending vs. revenue. More data, for even more purposes, skewing the data. Weren't you originally speaking of federal aid?

There are also military bases. A huge federal expenditure. More red state welcome military service than blue states. Even though California has a large number of bases, the military population is a smaller percentage of the state population than what red states hosting military bases enjoy as an average. What would the balance of spending vs. revenues be if we removed all spending from the calculation that is considered national rather than for the state? Like military bases and infrastructure projects. Keep it to just the social spending minus earned retirement?

I really think, if you wish to focus on what being a ‘welfare state’ means, we need to focus on only the welfare type money paid out. Not projects, retirement, etc.

I mentioned my uncles. The one who moved to Arizona came from California. He is now one of your Social Security recipients along with the countless millions in retirement cities like where he lives, Sun City West. My other uncle who moved to a red state for retirement is in Las Vegas, Nevada, after 30 years in the Air Force. He is collecting a military retirement and social security. How bad could the relocation of retirees skew your numbers? Aren’t the red states a more common place for middle-class retirees to move to than blue states?

Liberals who want to be irresponsible and live off other people's hard work?
Wait, are we talking about liberals or corporate CEOs?

    I'm confused.

True -- for instance, we all know that no sane person is visiting any black surgeon if there's a qualified white surgeon around.

    Surgeons gotta get paid somehow.
