Sources say Tuberville out after 10 seasons at Auburn

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, who won 85 games and one SEC championship in 10 seasons, won't return as the Tigers' coach in 2009, multiple sources close to the situation confirmed on Wednesday.

The decision was made after Tuberville met with Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs for the second time in as many days on Wednesday.
The decision was first reported by the Birmingham (Ala.) News on Wednesday.

The Birmingham News is reporting that Auburn officials have made contact with Texas Tech coach Mike Leach to gauge his interest in the Auburn job.

After all the thinking that there is no job open that Leach would like, NOW there is. I think Leach would love this job - TV exposure, great rivalries, SEC, proven past tradition.

Athletics director Jay Jacobs remained generic when addressing the future of the Auburn football program Wednesday in a press release.
“I will begin the search immediately for Auburn’s next head football coach,” Jacobs said in a statement. “We will move as quickly and efficiently as we possibly can, but we’re going to be thorough and strategic with our search to find the best fit for Auburn.”
According to the New York Times, Auburn contacted Texas Tech coach Mike Leach through the search firm of Bill Carr, who runs many coaching searches for big programs, including Auburn’s search for its baseball coach that resulted in the hiring of John Pawlowski.
Leach met with the University of Washington this week to discuss the Huskies’ open job, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and ESPN.
Texas Tech athletic director Graham Hays said the school is in the process of renegotiating Leach’s contract, but Leach’s agent, Gary O’Hagan, denied those reports, according to ESPN.com. Leach has two years remaining on a five-year contract and is making $1.75 million this season.
Tommy Tuberville was making $2.8 million this season.

Three sources close to the Leach camp said the Texas Tech coach would consider Auburn if the job were open.
Leach just completed an 11-1 regular season that saw Texas Tech climb as high as No. 2 in the BCS rankings before the Red Raiders lost their first game, after a 10-0 start, at Oklahoma.
Leach, who's been at Texas Tech nine years, has two years left on his contract. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported today that Leach was in Seattle to discuss the soon-to-be-vacant Washington head coaching job. Tyrone Willingham has been fired there but will coach the team's final game Saturday.
One source close to the Petrino camp said Auburn's window to hire him all but closed last year when he left the Atlanta Falcons for Arkansas.
Petrino's Arkansas contract has a $2.85-million buyout and a non-compete clause that is supposed to prohibit him from leaving Arkansas for another SEC West school.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR AUBURN?
Auburn Athletics Director Jay Jacobs said he would move quickly to fill the opening head coach's position, but who do you start looking at to fill the spot?
While it's too early for a confirmed list of candidates, there are some intiguing first guesses:
The top name on the list is reportedly Texas Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach. Leach has already spoken with Washington about the Huskies' coaching vacancy.
Other candidates include former Auburn and current Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. He's head coach in waiting there.
Jimbo Fisher is the head coach in waiting at Florida State.
Turner Gill is head coach at Buffalo. Paul Johnson is head coach at Georgia Tech.
Five years ago Auburn tried to hire Bobby Petrino who's now at Arkansas. However, he'd have to pay the Razorbacks more than $11 million to get out of his contract.
And then there's former Super Bowl coach Bill Cowher who would be a "Grand Slam", but there's no indication he'd consider a college job.

Myers couldn’t confirm newspaper reports that Leach was in Seattle this week to talk to UW officials. Myers said Leach, named Big 12 coach of the year on Tuesday, didn’t seek permission for an interview and that he hadn’t been contacted by Washington.
Leach didn’t return a call seeking comment Wednesday. A person who answered the phone Wednesday at IMG and identified himself as one of Leach’s agents disputed that Myers has offered a contract extension. He declined to give his name and hung up.
Gary O’Hagan, another of Leach’s agents, did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press. Leach’s attorney in Lubbock also did not immediately respond to a message.

Myers said last month that any contract discussions with Leach would wait until after the season. On Wednesday, Myers said he didn’t want to wait until after Texas Tech’s bowl game, which hasn’t been determined yet.

yeah, that sounds like a true agent that knows what he's talking about.
I'll trust Myers when he says that he's working on a new deal and wants to get it done before the bowl game.
I'll also trust Leach when he says he wants to stay.
I absolutely do not trust BSPN.
This guy could be a serious pick up for a lot of colleges. Aggies would be smart to get him.

as soon as all three of those coaches got a taste of victory, they bolted for the first program to come along. (Fran left Bama because of all the probation problems.)
Non of those coaches stayed more than 6 years, and Fran only did that with New Mexico because they sucked the first few years he was there and finally moved up to TCU after NM went to their first bowl in 30+ years.
Leach has had a winning season every year for 9 years at Tech. If he was gonna bolt, he would have done so by now.
Look, just because Les Miles couldn't wait to get the out of that funville known as Stillwater doesn't mean that Leach is ready to leave Lubbock.
I know it's hard for you to believe, since you seem to think that Lubbock is rampant with crime everywhere, but Leach really likes Lubbock and Tech......if you don't believe me, just check his quotes and click on the youtube video where he is doing the weather with the local forecast...

Even as confirmation came that Mike Leach was no longer seeking the University of Washington coaching job, Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell said he thinks there's a "great chance" his coach will leave.
The potential Heisman Trophy finalist said if Leach left it wouldn't be because of Texas Tech.
"I think it has to do more with him wanting a new challenge," Harrell said.
"There's a great chance" he'd leave, Harrell said. "But if he stays he's going to continue to be successful here, and I'd love to see that."
A few hours later a source close to the coach who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it confirmed Leach had withdrawn his name from consideration for the Huskies' post.
Boise State's Pat Hill on Thursday also withdraw his name from the Washington search.
Leach's name remains on a wish list at Auburn, a day after Tommy Tuberville resigned as coach of the Tigers.
Harrell, whose nonthrowing hand was heavily bandaged following his surgery Sunday to repair nine bones broken in his pinkie and ring finger, spoke to The Associated Press exclusively about Leach's future Thursday afternoon a short time after Harrell met with other media in Lubbock.
Harrell injured his left hand in Texas Tech's 35-28 win over Baylor on Saturday.
He said Leach "gets more out of less than probably anyone in the country" because he doesn't get first shot at top recruits; those players usually get calls from Oklahoma and Texas, both storied football programs, first.
Leach could build on an already-strong program elsewhere, Harrell said.
"Maybe he goes to a program where he'll be at the top of the conference, where he's not having to battle to build up a reputation of a team, where he can take a team that has a good reputation and it'll be easier for him to play in BCS games, maybe win a national championship," Harrell said.
Two Seattle newspapers had reported Leach was flying to the city Thursday for a second interview with Washington. But Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers told The Associated Press he had called across the street to Leach's campus office in Lubbock and was told the coach was there early Thursday afternoon.
Myers repeated what he had said a day before, that Texas Tech is negotiating with Leach on a contract extension that would keep him with the Red Raiders.
A call to Leach was not returned on Thursday.
Harrell, a fifth-senior, also said he believes that his favorite target, Michael Crabtree, will probably leave for the NFL draft after the season
"I do think my last year is his last year," Harrell said.
Crabtree, however, told reporters a short time earlier he was "not at all," considering going to the NFL. Asked directly if he would be returning for his junior year, the All American said, "Ah, yeah."
As for Leach, Harrell said, "He's got to make the decision where he wants to go for himself. I think he loves it here but he loves new challenges at the same time.
"He deserves every penny he gets, he deserves every offer, and wherever he goes he'll be successful, and it'll be fun to watch," Harrell said.
