What LeBron does is of no consequence. The point is the Knicks believe they can lure a big time Free Agent (or two) to sign there in 2010. That's why they traded Crawford and Randolph-- their top two scorers and top rebounder-- for cap relief. Just like Memphis did with Gasol.

Not at all, actually. Two completely different situations. Memphis was looking to save money not related to basketball. Knicks do it to try to be compe ive.
Yeah, to be compe ive in 2010-- Two years from now. Every situation is different, but the point still remains that the Knicks are in salary-slashing mode, and slashing the salary of Jeffries is something they might be very interested in, especially if they feel like the result will be LeBron + Bosh, which would make losing Lee inconsequential in their minds.

I don't think you understand, or you're completely blind as to what James is looking for. He isn't going to go to a team that just has a lot of cap space. "Hey, LeBron, come to New York! We MIGHT get Chris Bosh to play along side you!". No way is he leaving Cleveland for that . They need players on the team before that point. David Lee is a player. They need to dump the rest of their cap hogs, keep Lee and Robinson and draft extremely well, or they have absolutely no shot at LeBron.
I can't say I'd be in favor of the trade, since the Spurs are already behind the 8-ball in terms of chemistry/continuity, but at least it was well thought out proposal.
I think they'd be better off seeing if the Blazers would like to get Udoka back for the vet they want in the locker-room, in exchange for Diogu, but that's just me.
I don't think you're going to find a "big" with as much talent, while having low enough value to be attainable.
They might be looking at Andre Brown to fill that role, but I guess we'll see.
Gasol trade was something like the following scenario : Spurs trade Vaughn ( a 3rd string PG ), Thomas ( a big ), Splitter's rights and re-signed Horry ( to match salaries ) + picks for Al Jefferson.
Would be lovely but I don't see this happening at all.
Your trade sounds plausible and I'm sure a lot of people here like Lee but I don't thing the Spurs would ever take JJ's contract and I don't think Vaughn would get dealt anywhere, he'll prob be with the Spurs as a coach next year.
Besides Splitter is too good to trade away unless we're 100% sure he won't come.
About a month ago on ESPN fast break I think it was Rick Buker, who stated that the Knicks will probably not be able to resign Lee after this season, so using that info, I could see the Knicks trying to move him. I love the trade idea. Lee is a bigger, more athletic malik Rose, and Jefferies is a 6'11" sf, who can hit the 3 and defend. If the salaries would work, I'd do it.

other than most trade proposals this one isn't totally out of this world and I also like Lee.
one thing for sure: Knicks have to sacrifice Lee to save the chance to land Lebron. re signing Lee, who asks for 10 million per year, will eat much cup space. so they will either try to use him as a teaser to unload a long term contract (could also be Curry) or to get a 1st round pick.
the problems I see are: Lee asks for more money the Spurs likely can afford additional to the big 3, they might be willing to pay something like 6-7 M, but not 10. so Lee could be short term rental and then the Spurs are stuck with an totally overpayed player like Jeffries, who is something like Elson in the SF/PF version.
and: as usual so many other teams have much more to offer if the Knicks put Lee on the market. we even don't have a 1st rounder to offer. (unless we offer the 2011 pick, which I don't know if it is technically possible). watch out for the Cavs to be very active at deadline, especially when it comes to get a player like Lee. they could offer Varejao plus Hickson plus a 1st rounder for Lee plus Jeffries. what offer do you take if you are Walsh?
It's a good trade proposal, it's certainly the best one that I've seen yet, and there are reasons both teams might be interested in it. I don't know why some of you are being s about it.
Those would be two immediate frontcourt upgrades. Certainly wouldn't hurt to entertain the idea. Although Donnie Walsh is a uva lot shrewder and wiser than Isiah Thomas.
I've thought the exact same thing as I have been reading through this. And anyone who says David Lee sucks should pull their head out of their derriere. Lee could be a good part of the team going forward and if you have to dip into some of that 2010 cash to keep him I think you do it. Let's face it...out 2010 plan is probably going to consist of signing solid role players over a big name anyway so this would be a nice start. Taking on Jeffries contract isn't great, but if you look at the current garbage on our front line anything is an improvement. It's a bullet I would bite to get Lee.

Damn it. Lee could be a great addition. A role player who can be productive. Right now, he's on top of the NBA rebounders.

I would be reasonably ok with this trade if it went through. I think Jeffries is better than Udoka, albeit hes also more expensive, and I think that Lee could help a lot. And since I don't think Splitter is ever going to join the Spurs, then I am willing to trade his rights, as long as its not to Houston.
