I'm pretty sure he's playing him because he's not sucking. A jump shooting big is awesome for this team. I just hope the other big men stop sucking too.
Is Pop playing Bonner so much to strengthen his trade value a little down the road? It seems like this team doesnt need a jump shooting big man, as much as they need a workhorse down low to help out timmy.

if Bonnner keeps playing like this, I don't want him to go anywhere..
a workhorse down low is good and all..but if Bonner keeps shooting like this(which he can), he brings out other team's big men out of the paint to guard him..also, he's been much more aggressive on the boards and defensively..
Another big body in the post is great but the post is where Duncan operates best and what is really needed is for Bonner to draw out his defender so he can't double Timmy.
as long as he stays aggressive his trade value could increase since it expires in 2010.
its great that hes playing this well but im not convinced he can sustain it. i hope he either proves me wrong or another team bites on a bonner trade and we come out with a steal.
If you think about it, all succcessful players must have had a breakout season and maybe, just maybe, this is Bonner's year to shine.. we should all be rooting for him to succeed.
It actually looks like the lightswitch has gone on for Bonner. He has lost is fear, is playing hard at both ends, and really fitting the team well.
I'm pretty sure Mahinmi will get first shot to be the workhorse down low that we need, maybe starting in January.
I'll also say that KT has picked up his game lately, which is a welcome improvement - he's htting the boards an his jumper, and rotating better on D... now it would be nice if Fab could find his game again.
bonner has been playing well but i think he still lacks the mental toughness to compete in the playoffs. spurs should hold off until around the all star break just in case bonner decides to have hedo turkoglu moment, going from mediocre to great. he's definitely earned a third/fourth chance to prove himself but i'm still doubtful he will emerge in the spurs' playoff rotation. bonner hasn't been playing well enough to demonstrate that he's clutch.
i think he'll be a great addition to a playoff team in the east. if bonner fails to make another leap, i will be happy if the spurs trade him for an expiring contract and a first/second round pick. would give some luxury tax relief next year if the spurs decide to use their MLE.
The Spurs would look stupid, trading Bonner now. The way he's playing he's giving Duncan the opportunity to do his thing down low, avoiding big men double-teams. If he does get double-teamed, Bonner or any other shooter on the spurs is making the defense pay.

I'm curious as to whether Mahinmi will become the starter next to Duncan, or if Bonner will keep it. Or, perhaps Oberto or Thomas can earn it. We shall see.

I would rather them trade Manu, if they can get equal value or close to it. Bonner's shooting ability and hustle has been underappreciated his entire career. I have no doubt if they were to trade Bonner, they would not be getting equal value in return, because he is so underrated. Obviously not an all-star or close to it, but he is a damn fine NBA player. How many 6'10" 240lb big men do you see splitting a double team with the dribble? I can't think of any off of the top of my head, and yet I saw Bonner do that already this season. How many NBA players will play as hard as they can every night? Maybe a handful, he is one of them. DO NOT TRADE BONNER.
Yeah no joke if they trade Matt,(the only big worth a crud right now) then San Antonio is gonna have alot of people getting sick. Thats what happens when Fab and Kurt hit the floor. And do I trust the FO with their moves on picking up bigs? Oh heck no I dont. Lets see how Ian turns out before they move on Matt. It would be a horror show if they traded Matt for someone like Kurt. And thats about all your gonna get for Matt. Names like Wilcox etc. dont impress me only because I know how Pop is with Bigs. He'd be on the bench sitting next to Fab,Kurt and Ian. While we have no choice but to go small.
Theres a big key. How will Matt play well when he's on the bench during the PO's? Lets see how he does for a month before we think that far.
No other spur than TD and Manu is untradable, I mean even Parker can be traded if any team offer us a bait that is attractive enough. There's no doubt that each team wants a big guy who's even as good as Dirk yet just takes 3m instead of 15m from his team, but the question is jsut the salary. We can hardly trade him for a guy as well as him who also just earns 3m as salary. Unless we can get Scola in return, NO WAY should we trade Bonner. Bonner is much better at long-range shooting than scola but still not as good as him over all, morey isn't gonna agree on such a trade that brings Scola back to san antonio.
Bonner is a good fit for the spurs. And one of the more tradeable pecies that they have, they have to make sure they get a good return on that trade if it were to ever happen.
I've seen a few quotes like this. The mentality appears to be: Trade players who suck; keep those who don't. But what NBA general manager in his right mind wants to trade for bad players? These GMs are not stupid. They're not fooled by a mediocre (at best) player enjoying a decent stretch of games.
If Bonner proves his improved play is not a fluke by remaining a solid contributor for the rest of the season and into next season, then the Spurs might be able to make a decent trade. Until then, unless the Vikings GM who authorized the Herschel Walker trade is now an NBA GM, we won't get anything for Bonner. So, enjoy his good play while it lasts. And let's hope it doesn't end anytime soon.
If Bonner can keep playing like a professional basketball player, then he brings a great asset to the table. Bonner on a good day is exactly what the Spurs needed when Horry left.
Unfortunately, Bonner on a bad day is a waste of floor space. If he goes back into the doghouse, he's useless to us and pretty much everybody else.
Thus is the catch 22 of the trade game.

I actually think that Mahinmi would play behind Bonner. Seems to make more sense that way because, from what I have seen, Mahinmi's offensive abilities could possibly be underated. Hard to tell though considering he hasn't had much playing time. (He did have like 12 points in 6 minutes against the Bucks one year though.)
I don't think we should trade him. I don't know if I want him starting either though. He definitely gives us some versatility. Having him, Fab, KT, and Ian will give Pop a lot of different options.
