DALLAS — Some things never change. San Antonio stumbles out of the gate, beset by injuries, and across the nation the pundits yawn and advise not to worry. It’s the Spurs.
Dallas stumbles out of the gate, beset by injuries, and across the nation the pundits warn of impending doom. It’s the Mavs.
"The Spurs have a track record," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "They’ve done it year after year after year. They hit a rough patch, they keep winning. They go on the road for a month, they win. They win 75 percent of their games on the road.
"So for us, we’ve got to stay hungry and understand the team coming in here is the ultimate in terms of experience and a championship pedigree."
The Mavs lead the season series 1-0, winning in San Antonio with Manu Ginobili still rehabbing from ankle surgery.
Both teams enter tonight’s second of four matchups with 11-8 records. The Spurs started 2-5; the Mavs 2-7. The Spurs were without Ginobili and then Tony Parker; the Mavs have missed Josh Howard for eight consecutive games.
The Spurs have won two in a row; The Mavs have won four. The Spurs have won seven of 10; the Mavs 9 of 10.
"The only way we can beat the critics is by keep winning games," Dirk Nowitzki said. "I guess if you lose in the Finals two years ago the way we did and then we won 70 games almost, but lost in the first round. I said it last year, we could have gone 82-0 and nobody would have believed we had a chance."
However, Nowitzki said reassuringly: "We’re feeling good about ourselves."
The Spurs will suit up a healthy team tonight; The Mavs are hopeful, but not sure. Dallas practiced at full strength on Monday, but what that means for Howard (sprained left ankle) and Antoine Wright (left groin strain) is a waiting game.
"We had everybody out [practicing]," Carlisle said. "But where things will be with Mother Nature [today] is a different story."
Parker, San Antonio’s 6-foot-2 penetrating point guard, is averaging 17.6 points on 62.5 percent shooting and 7.0 assists in the five games since he returned from a sprained ankle. Ginobili is averaging 13.6 points and shooting 52.6 percent in seven games.
Tim Duncan is averaging a double-double (20.8 points, 10.4 rebounds) and, as usual, the Spurs rank fourth in the league in scoring defense (92.4).
"I saw their game at Denver the other night. They just crushed Denver, who’s really been playing well at home," Nowitzki said. "Parker is back so they’re a heck of a team again. It’s always like this. They just seem to struggle early, but once they have everybody healthy and playing well together, they’re always a tough team to play."
Nowitzki wins again
Dirk Nowitzki earned his second NBA Western Conference Player of the Week award in three weeks Monday.
The power forward averaged 30.7 points and 10.0 rebounds in three victories.
Star-struck
So guard J.J. Barea puts together a string of highlight-reel performances and suddenly he’s the BMOC, according to teammate and friend Dirk Nowitzki.
"He’s changed already a little bit," Nowitzki said Monday. "He went up to the bouncer on Saturday and said, 'Don’t you know who I am?’ "
Barea has a point. He scored a season-high 22 points in Saturday’s win over the Hawks for an 18.3 average over the last three games.
George lauded
Devean George has logged 20 minutes or more in the past five games and has started at small forward in the last three.
"He’s a bright spot for us in the last week," Rick Carlisle said. "It’s great that he’s got his conditioning and got his health. He understands what we need from him and he’s doing his job. He did a nice job the other night with [Atlanta’s Joe] Johnson. He was good on [Sacramento’s John] Salmons. He’s just been real solid. We need him to continue with that."
Manu Ginobili is likely the next task for George.

when was the last time the Spurs have had an "easy" W over the Mavs? It has been four years since the Spurs have beaten the Mavs by double digits, while the Mavs get about one blowout win over the Spurs every year. All of a sudden, it's going to be different? Hey, the Spurs might win, who knows. But there is nothing to suggest they will win going away.

Scouting the Spurs
Are they suddenly the run-and-gun Spurs? Well, not exactly. But they have been running up the points lately, topping 103 points in five of the last eight games. They have gone 6-2 in that stretch. ... Like the Mavericks, the Spurs have put a slow start behind them, going 11-5 since the Mavericks won in San Antonio to drop the Spurs to 0-3. ... Manu Ginobili missed the first 12 games after off-season ankle surgery but has begun to regain his spark, hitting 7 of 18 3-pointers in the last three games. ... Newcomer Roger Mason has been a hit, averaging nearly 14 points and shooting a robust 48 percent on 3-pointers.
Scouting the Mavericks
They are 5-8 when opponents reach 90 points and 6-0 when they don't. ... Jason Kidd has done everything well lately, except shoot the ball. He's 2-for-13 from 3-point range in the last four games, 5-for-21 overall. ... Josh Howard may return, but even if he does, Devean George has gotten the coach's attention with his defense. Spurs, Mavs square off in Dallas
(Sports Network) - Southwest Division rivals meet Tuesday when the San Antonio Spurs travel north to take on the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center.
The Spurs won their second straight game on Saturday when Tim Duncan scored 20 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and had five assists as San Antonio pounded Golden State, 123-88, winning at home against the Warriors for the 21st straight time.
Michael Finley and Tony Parker each scored 17 for the Spurs, who have won six of their last eight games. Parker also had eight assists while Matt Bonner had 14 points for the Spurs, who aim to improve their 5-3 road record tonight.
The Mavs, meanwhile, won their fourth straight game and improved to 3-0 on a season-long, seven-game homestand Saturday when Jose Juan Barea scored 16 of his season-high 22 points in the third quarter. Dallas narrowly escaped blowing a big lead in the fourth quarter in the 100-98 win over Atlanta.
Dirk Nowitzki added 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Jason Terry chipped in 19 points off the bench for the Mavericks, who have won five straight at home after dropping their first four games of the year as the host.
Dallas will finish its residency with games against Charlotte, Oklahoma City and Denver.
On the injury front, Mavs forward Josh Howard is questionable for tonight's game with a sprained left ankle.
The Mavs snapped a three-game skid against the Spurs in San Antonio on November 4 when Nowitzki poured in a game-high 30 points in a rather easy 98-81 win.
Parker had 22 in that contest but suffered an ankle sprain just two games later that put him on the shelf for three weeks.

The Mavericks have won nine of 10. The Spurs have won six of eight. Both teams are hitting a little bit of a sizzle and it should make for a fun night at AAC.
Said Jason Terry of the Spurs: "It doesn't matter -- early, late, summertime, what have you. Anytime you face the San Antonio Spurs, it's our rival and it's a big game.''
The Spurs don't necessarily feel like they're playing their best basketball. But it is certainly a lot better than when the Mavericks won at San Antonio in early November. If nothing else, the Spurs now have Manu Ginobili back.
"I'm not sure we're playing really well,'' Ginobili said. "We had two really good games. But we've been a little unreliable - some good games, some bad games.''
As for the Mavericks, Manu said: "Every time we play play the Mavericks, it's a great game. Most of the times, it doesn't even matter what we've been doing before. It's just different.''
