toward the end when he scored 25 points in just 13 Nuggets possessions (see above)? For that stretch, Melo's personal offensive efficiency rating was nearly 200. At that rate, in a 48-minute game he would have scored 184 points.![]()
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/column...Perdiem-121108The record books will say that Carmelo Anthony only tied the league mark for points in a quarter with his 33-point explosion in the third quarter of Denver's 116-105 win over Minnesota on Wednesday.
But the reality is that his feat was much, much more impressive than that of the man he tied, George Gervin. For starters, the Iceman played in a more up-tempo era than the current one; even with the Nuggets being a fast-paced team, they play 15 percent slower than the Spurs did in 1977-78.
Moreover, this game wasn't a circus. Gervin's 33-point quarter and David Thompson's second-place, 32-point effort both came on April 9, 1978 -- when the duo battled for the scoring le on the last day of the season against apathetic opponents. Melo's quarter came with his team trailing by a dozen and needing to rally to win. Gervin's came in a 153-132 squeaker.
Melo's Feat: 25 points in 13 trips
7:15 Anthony free throws (2 points, 1 trip)
6:28 Anthony 3-pointer (5 points, 2 trips)
5:52 Anthony free throw (6 points, 3 trip)
5:28 Anthony lay-yup (8 points, 4 trips)
4:52 Anthony 3-pointer (11 points, 5 trips)
4:35 Anthony dunk (13 points, 6 trips)
4:01 Balkman miss (13 points, 7 trips)
3:34 Anthony jumper (15 points, 8 trips)
3:09 Anthony 3-pointer (18 points, 9 trips)
2:29 Anthony jumper (20 points, 10 trips)
1:57 Anthony jumper (22 points, 11 trips)
1:22 Billups free throws (22 points, 12 trips)
0:52 Anthony 3-pointer (25 points, 13 trips)
And if Anthony's 33-point quarter is a record, then what can we possibly say about the 6:23 stretch toward the end when he scored 25 points in just 13 Nuggets possessions (see above)? For that stretch, Melo's personal offensive efficiency rating was nearly 200. At that rate, in a 48-minute game he would have scored 184 points.
For the quarter as a whole, Melo scored 33 points on just 23 trips. He made 4-of-5 3s in the period, an eye-opener given that he entered the game just 14-for-43 on the season. In fact, it appeared part of Minnesota's strategy against him was to concede the long J.
It's also fun to see what impact the quarter had on his season stats. Anthony entered the quarter shooting 40.7 percent from the floor and left it at 42.4 percent. He began the quarter averaging 23.0 points per 40 minutes and ended it averaging 24.5. He scored 8 percent of his season total in the quarter.
And with all that going, it was nice to see new Wolves coach Kevin McHale step in and take charge over there, huh? While Denver scored on nearly every trip -- 40 points in just 23 third-quarter possessions -- the game log indicates Minnesota only called a full timeout at the six-minute mark.

I wish we could see how Gervin scored his 33pts in that quarter for comparison. They dont say about that.
6:28 Anthony 3-pointer
4:52 Anthony 3-pointer
3:09 Anthony 3-pointer
0:52 Anthony 3-pointer
Hmmmm, there wasn't a 3-point line when Gervin did it. Not to take anything away, but to claim one is more impressive than the other is f-ing stupid. Why does BSPN need to rank everything?
Curious - how many shots attempts did Gervin shoot in his quarter?
To put the BS in BSPN

"George Gervin, the Hall of Famer and now a Spurs community-relations official, was out and about. The phone rang and it was Gervin's son, George Gervin Jr., with word that dad's NBA mark had been tied.
"He told me Carmelo Anthony had just tied your record of 33 points in a quarter," Gervin said. "He must have had Casper the Friendly Ghost guarding him just like I had Casper the Friendly Ghost guarding me."
The article also says
Anthony shot 12-of-15, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Thompson was 13-of-14, with the three-pointer not yet in the NBA.
Can't find how many shots Gervin took yet still looking
"I was real hot," Gervin said of his second quarter, which gave him 53 points at halftime and allowed him to take most of the second half off - the scoring le won. "And we didn't have the three-ball then. . . . I'm going to congratulate Carmelo, but I'll tell him I got another record in scoring 63 points in just 33 minutes." Iceman = Badmother er
if gervin's game was a circus, then melo's was a carnival. the mchale coached timberwolves? does anyone even know who the wolves have at SF??
also, where was this article when manu scored 24 in less than 5 minutes against the hawks? per48 that would have been well over 200 pts
If Anthony > Gervin then Manu > everyone.
You son of a !![]()
Rodney Rogers' feat works out to 2880 points per 48 minutes.
was that the guy that got paraluyzed or died?
zomg, by my calculation his efficiency rate for that period of time is 400+ only chuck norris previously hit a 400+.
He was in an ATV accident a couple of weeks ago and was paralyzed from the neck down. I'll always remember him for that game against Utah, though.
yea now i remember thats pretty sad![]()
