How many NBA players are African? Four? Five? And most of them, like most other international players, are fairly respectable in terms of investing in their homelands.
Also, Africa isn't a country.
Aright guys/girls, I'm an Econ major and to make things short, I was following news in Africa, obviously they are starving, (as a country), diseases, starvation, etc. Now, obviously your average "joe" can not send millions down to Africa to help support them, because they've got to support themselves.
Now, I'm very curious to see, most, if not all the NBA/NFL superstars happen to be black, not a racist comment, it's just the truth. Now, these guys on average make 10-15 million dollars a year, say that again, 15 million dollars a year. Now, couldn't the likes of Kobe, James, Owens, Shaq, and all of the other superstars that are making millions, why don't they donate approximately 1 million each? IM SURE THEY ALL HAVE OVER 100 million in their bank accounts, so why not donate back to where they came from? I know if I were in their situations, I'd donate as much as I could to the country where I came from.
I'm actually writing a paper on this topic, so any input would be great. Thanks-

Pfffffffff...
Stupidest thing Ive ever heard. America is drowning. How come the rich, white executives who write those black player's checks, don't just donate a million dollars each to the people here who can't afford medical care or are facing foreclosure?
You're main thesis is that black people don't give back enough to a continent we destroyed and stole their ancestors from hundreds of years ago?. Unless you're attending Jerry Falwell's "university", good luck with that.
I'm speaking behalf of "black" people themselves.
So that's about 65% of the NBA
60% of the NFL
50% of the NBL
Speaking as a black African, I really wish you wouldn't. The descendants of American slaves (and their slaveowners) have almost nothing in common with us.
This is so ing ignorant. It's beyond offensive that somebody could be this arrogant and dumb.
Most of them didn't come from Africa. Maybe their descendants did, but that's a big leap.
Anyway, the average NBA salary is under $6M a year, over half that goes to taxes. There aren't many players at all with $100 million in their bank accounts.
OMG this is like the dumbest post ever. Black athletes should donate 100 million to Africa? Do you know what that much money would do for Africa? Nothing. That's like a drop in the bucket. Why don't you ask guys like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates to donate to Africa....whoops they already are! George Bush has already donated Billions of dollars to Africa.
From what I understand, most of the 'superstar' players all have their own charities that they either run or contribute their money/time/name to. They are giving back, in whatever way they feel strongest about.
Using Duncan as an example, it's children that have lost parents at young ages, cancer detection and treatment for people that need assistance, and a 'character' program for school kids. His Foundation works in San Antonio, St. Croix, and North Carolina (where Wake Forest is). Those are the places he 'comes' from, and that's where he gives back. I think that's fairly represen ive of the league.
He/She actually said for them to donate 1 million not 100 miliion. Anywho I agree with you why do we always put it on athletes to donate money. Where is Warren Buffet, the Bush family with all thier oil money? All these big corporations have a responsibilty to be good citizens and so far have failed.
Buffett has pledged to gradually give 85% of his Berkshire stock to five foundations. A dominant five-sixths of the shares will go to the world's largest philanthropic organization, the $30 billion Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, whose principals are close friends of Buffett's (a connection that began in 1991, when a mutual friend introduced Buffett and Bill Gates).
The Gateses credit Buffett, says Bill, with having "inspired" their thinking about giving money back to society. Their foundation's activities, internationally famous, are focused on world health -- fighting such diseases as malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis -- and on improving U.S. libraries and high schools.
Thanks was not aware of that
Sarah Palin is that you?
You better switch topics.
Speaking of LeBron, I don't know if he donates money to African causes, but I do know that he frequently turns on his personal cash spigot on behalf of various charities and organizations in the Akron area- where he comes from.
A lot of these guys give a lot of their time and money to a lot of causes. Hard to get on their cases for not giving more to Africa, especially since in a lot of cases, there's no way of knowing that money finds its way into the hands of the people who need it.
The Average Black Athlete does not make 10-15 million a year. Are you on crack? Get on a boat and go to Africa if you care so much.
Doubtful the money goes to people that need it.
Are you in Junior High School there buddy? Because you dont seen to know much about..anything.
Is lies!!
Almost all of them came from the USA! I don't think you meant for your statement to sound racist, but it does.
"I believe the children are our future..." -Whitney Houston
"Crack is whack!" -Whitney Houston
wow....just wow.
The OP is so racist they don't even know it. But where is the mention of Mutombo? He has done so much for charity, I don't know the specifics but I know he donated a lot of money to building hospitals in his native land.
The main point being echoed obviously is that athletes do give back, but to the places they actually come from. LeBron gives to Akron, Tim gives to St. Croix/SA/NC and Deke gives to Africa.
And plus, the rich executives who sign the checks do need to do more and can do more than the athletes, that should be the real focus. Buffet and Gates are a god start. I may not like Microsoft, but you can't find too many faults with what Gates is doing with his foundation. To quote Chris Rock "I'm not talking 'bout rich, I'm talking 'bout wealthy. Shaq is rich, the guy who signs his check is wealthy. If Bill Gates woke up with Oprah's money he'd throw himself out a window."
And I really hope this is a troll post. I don't even want to think about how you got into college with this level of ignorance.
I would if I were making 15 million a year.
Not even witty. If you're going to try to have a comeback, think a little more. Maybe you're not capable of that as evidenced by your posts so far.A bit of advice:
Don't post on this board anymore.
