If I was a betting man, I'd say Nolan likes Depp for the Riddler.
If Depp had half a brain and career, which he does, he'd run for his life, from Nolan's Batman franchise.
Either him or Daniel Day-Lewis would be an excellent choice.
It didn't stop him from being in three Pirates Of The Carribbean movies, and no matter how much you might hate the Nolan Batman franchise, there's very few movie franchises tier than the Pirates one. It might be the worst.
The franchise may not be all that good, but his character is pretty cool

and tonight Christopher Nolan is doing some Blu-Ray chat thing, so he'll probably confirm that Eddie ing Murphy isn't the Riddler. I'm actually more worried about Shia La working his way into the franchise and swinging like Tarzan with chimpanzees and making it extremely lame.

I can't see Eddie Murphy as more than a comedian. His style--to straight-lace until he starts to laugh at himself--makes me think he's about to laugh himself out of a dramatic moment.
