so i have some property just south of town and have been out there a few times deciding some things. recently we saw a neighbor leaving with a HUGE wild hog tied to the front of his truck...i mean this thing covered the whole front grill of a F350, had these long tusks, and looked in scary. recently we saw some pretty large prints in the ground...

there is nothing out there, no buildings, just shrubs, weeds, trees and 15 acres of nothing. we'll be doing some site clearing soon to cut a road and eventually build a two homes for our family...

...i don't want to go out there for any length of time without a gun, especially at night. anyone know what type of gun and ammo i would need to kill a wild hog? i'm a novice to guns and have been looking to invest in something, especially now that i am gonna be moving out there soon. any thoughts/ideas are greatly appreciated.

A hand gun probably wont be good enough to stop it right away. You will want to look at a rifle with a caliber of around .270 for a one shot kill. Wouldnt hurt to have a sidearm as a backup though in case the one shot doesnt do it or you miss. if you want a hand gun, which even the cheapest will probably cost more than a cheap rifle, you cant go wrong with a 9mm. Just unload on the bas if he charges you.

Bass Pro shop has some pretty inexpensive .270 caliber bolt-action rifles.

.243 is too small. i'd go with a .30/06. you don't want to be in handgun range of a mad hog.

a rifle, put safety aside, get a hand-cannon and run right up on that like it was a crack dealer in Inglewood. Get a .357 mag or if you ever wanna go backpacking in Alaska and want a Grizzly gun, get a .44 mag. A .45 or .38 probably wouldn't put a hog down in a single shot, but a .357 or .44 would.

have you ever BEEN hog hunting?

I'd really like to see someone try and take down a charging boar with a hand cannon like a .357. I'd wager that it would gouge the out of you with its tusk before you can even get a proper shot off that actually hits.

Yes, a .243 is too small. did someone recommend that? a .30/.06 will do it quite well, lots of power but it also depends on the grain load you go with (for any gun). for pure stopping power the .30/.06 would be the way to go, but if you want something more accurate at a longer range a .270 will do just fine because of the flatter trajectory of the bullet. I've put some pretty large boar down with my .270, one good shot and they take maybe a step at most before they drop.

i'd say just get a 12 gauge. that way you could have bird shot and slugs for the hogs. only problem is you wont have a scope so you'd have to be a decent shot and if youre a novice to guns you prob arent. thats why you practice though.

I dunno. I've dropped mule deer from 300 yards before with a .243. It's all about shot placement.

well the hog usually has a lot thicker skin/fat layer. harder to get the bullet to the vitals.

I know a guy out in Poteet that did that ... but on accident! We where using dogs to scare out the hogs, he bolted after the dogs when they got away from him and had his knife in his hand. He jumped over some bushes and didnt realize it was a creek bed, fell about 6 feet right on top of a hog! He managed to stab it near the base of the skull then jumped away and let the dogs finish it off. was a pretty quick kill but he was freaking out the rest of the day.

I've never had a problem killing anything with my .308 Winchester.

Whatever you buy, buy it fast and stock up on bullets before PEBO jacks the federal firearms tax to 1200%.

Where is the vegetarian thread starter when you need him?

I have no recomendations. I just thought i would be the comic relief for this thread.

I saw something on National Geographic a few years ago (probably in between classes..I was taking a nap) about wild pigs/hogs and it said that if you let a domestic pig (like the cute pink ones) out in the wild they'll develop into the monster ones like the one your neighbor killed. They also said elephants without tusks are more aggressive. That was interesting. Unless everyone knew that except me because I don't hunt.

My next planned gun purchase was going to be a .30/.30 lever action (just because they're fun to shoot) but I noticed a Marlin .308 lever at Academy the other day...might be handy to have 2 guns chambered the same...

i'm imaging a group guys talking about hunting. ashbeigh on one of their arms... then she speaks up and everyone looks around at each other. boyfriend gives her a kiss on the forehead and tells her she's cute, now run and play.

Anyway, you should buy a trap and catch them. Then let some mexicans come kill them and pay you for them.

not a bad idea. traps run nearly as much as a decent rifle though.
