The Daily Dose: Miles to Sign With Memphis
    Taken from nba.com:
    http://www.nba.com/2009/news/feature...109/index.html

Looks like Memphis want to sign Darius Miles to a 10 day contract. More interesting is how the Blazers will react.

Too bad spurs fans who wanted Miles to sign with us. But I don't care- I just want to laugh at Portland when their salary cap blows out.

    yes, it seems done.

Apparently the Memphis Grizzlies have chosen to ignore the Portland Trail Blazers' recent request.

The Grizzlies have re-signed Darius Miles, who is attempting a comeback from major knee surgery, to a 10-day contract, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported Friday night.
    lastname
    Miles
If Miles plays in two more games this season, Portland will be on the hook for $18 million -- the amount remaining on Miles' contract, which would count against Portland's salary cap and could force the team to pay luxury tax.

Hours before Miles cleared waivers Friday, Portland team president Larry Miller sent an e-mail to the other 29 NBA teams warning of legal action if a team takes Miles simply to adversely impact Portland's salary cap.

Miles, who was waived by the Grizzlies on Tuesday to avoid guaranteeing his contract for the rest of the season, is expected to be back in Memphis on Saturday.

The chance of paying the luxury tax led to the Blazers to send the e-mail, threatening legal action if a team signs Miles.

"Please be aware that if a team engages in such conduct, the Portland Trail Blazers will take all necessary steps to safeguard its rights, including, without limitation, litigation," part of Miller's e-mail reads, according to SI.com and Yahoo Sports!, which obtained it.

Miller tried explain his action in a conference call Friday.

"Our purpose here was not in any way to keep Darius from being able to play," Miller said. "If he can come back and help a team to win and play at a level on the court that helps the team, we have no problem with that at all.

"We were hearing a lot of rumblings and rumors that there were teams out there planning to sign Darius Miles specifically and maliciously to hurt our organization. This was our way of responding to that and letting folks know that we were not going to take it sitting down."

Later Friday, the NBA players' association said it planned to file a grievance against the Trail Blazers, on Miles' behalf.

Miles, who was the third overall pick by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2000 draft, signed a six-year, $48 million deal with Portland in 2004. The Blazers waived Miles at the end of the 2007-08 season after an independent doctor determined he hadn't recovered from microfracture surgery on his right knee in November 2006.

Seconded. Bring it POR . Not only did they have no ground to stand on, they also put themselves into a position to have to deal with legal action from Miles.

I bet the rockets is the culprit that cooks it up, grizzlies are just rockets' puppet who can't do anything against their will. Rockets need Miles to fill in for Ron and Battier when they get injuried occasionally, but they don't want to provoke the blazers so they need their attendent to act as the scapegoat. Why the doesn't Mavs cultivate such a team that works as its slave?

Look to Feb 18th as being a very interesting game for Memphis. It would be nice if Mile's contract was extended an additional 30 days so he could make that game...

I kinda wished Memphis could've waited until Feb 18th when they play @Portland. Starting Miles with Pritchard in attendance would be epic.

Miles signing with Memphis (an playing 2 more games) isn't a good thing for Blazers but it's far from being a disaster.

The biggest consequence will be a financial with some luxury tax and maybe the insurance asking Blazers to pay Miles salary. With their deep Pocket owner, it won't really hurt them.

It will also hurt Blazers 2009 cap space but :
    - Even with Miles, Blazers will still have some cap space.
    - The 2009 FA class is quite bad. Blazers biggest need is at PG and SF. The best they can do is players like Mike Bibby or Hedo Turkoglu. These players aren't that good and will be too old when Blazers' core will peak.

Even with Miles salary not counting against their team salary, Blazers best shot at improving was to do a trade at the deadline with their expiring contracts and prospects. They still can do that.

I would beg to differ on the SF position being a need for them. After all, they have Outlaw and Batum to man that spot. I would say that is a position of strength. Now, if a veteran presence is what you're referring to, I can see that.

Only if they renounce their rights to Webster. They have a logjam at the position, but he's still probably better than anybody they could bring in.

I would sign Miles then tell Portland what would they give me not to play him. Portland wants to play hardball so I think a #1 draft pick would be worth it to Portland to free up their cap room. Like Tony Says--it's only Business!

Webster has signed an extension last summer.

Blazers have 9 players (Przybilla, Oden, Aldrige, Webster, Roy, Bayless, Rodriguez, Fernandez and Batum) under contract in 2009. With Miles salary added, Blazers team salary is $41.3M. They also have team options on Outlaw ($3.6M) and on Blake ($4M).
Even when you consider that the salary cap won't raise due to the economic crisis and when you count cap holds, Blazers will have between $9M (if they keep both Blake and Outlaw) and $16M (if they don't keep them) in cap space

What the were the Blazers thinking to tell every team in the league not to sign a player or they will sue you. Crazy. They are not looking to smart as of late.

Their positions of strength are SG (Roy, Fernandez), PF (Aldridge) and C if Oden pans out.
Their biggest need is without a doubt at PG.
They are fine at SF with Batum, Outlaw and Webster but none of these players can be qualified as an above average starting SF.

Agreed...they most certainly need to go after a PG with the extra cash. With potential premier players at SG, PF and C, I see no reason to overspend for a SF right now. The prospects they have seem to be more than solid enough to hold down the position if the current players they have(plus a new PG) wind up being impact players.

You're right on that extension, but your numbers are still a bit off.

    Webster - $5 million
    Pryzbilla - $6.8 million
    Oden - $5.3 million
    Aldridge - $5.8 million
Blake - $4.9 million (they'll pick up that option)
    Outlaw - $4 million
    Roy - $3.9 million
    Bayless - $2.1 million
    Rodriguez - $1.9 million
    Fernandez - $1.1 million
    Batum - $1.1 million

That comes out to $41.9. Then throw in Miles and they are up to $51 million. That leaves them about $7 million in cap room as opposed to $9 million. And that 7 evaporates if they don't renounce Frye & Diogu - which isn't a given in either case, especially with a weak free agent class.

We don't have the same source for salaries. I use http://www.shamsports.com/content/pa...es/blazers.jsp that is more accurate than website like hoopshype.

I didn't use hoopshype, just found the contracts online. Your source undervalues the options for Blake & Outlaw.
