Interesting analogy.
One thing I miss about Elie was how fiery he used to be at his teammates if they were half assing it during a game. Dude was just an awesome guy to have in the locker room.
For some reason Roger Mason seems to remind me a lot of Mario Elie. I think he's such a fearless shooter and he never backs down from guys even when you would expect him to be overmatch. He's just a tough dude. The guy also brings like a "good luck charm" factor to the Spurs because he is always in the right spot and the right time like a younger Robert Horry & D. Fish.

I would say yes, the similarities are there, but Mason was not as vocal as Elie.

Good comparison -- a couple of East coast city boys with ice in their veins.
(And the Spurs got Mason in his prime!)
Elie was a way more physical player and Mason has a much much much faster release on his shot. They both hit a lot of big shots and both jumped around overseas for a while, but the similarities pretty much end there.

I'd say Mason reminds me more of Stephen Jackson than Mario Elie, with his willingless to hit pressure shots, along with being young and athletic with a little swagger. Jackson was longer though, but Mason is a better ballhandler than Jackson was.
Jackson reminds me of Elie. He talks alot and not afraid to hit shots.
If RMJ continues to play well be one of the most sought after shooters in 2010.
which is why I don't think the Jackson comparison is as accurate but his timing for big shots is similar.
I saw Mario Ellie playing very early in his pro-career, when he was in Portugal, representing Ovarense. Great guy and awesome basketball player. Anyway, he was a better player - but arguably with a less refined skill-set - than Mason, I think; but essentially, he was more physical, more fierce, defended better and was an emotional and vocal leader to a point very far away from Mason's possibilities.
Spurs need a Mario Elie. Cuz they got alot of pussies on this team.
I still miss Jackson. Imagine, if he had resigned with the Spurs, he wouldn't have been involved in the malice at the palace.
It looks like the biggest mistake the Spurs front office made was only signing him for two seasons....
I've never seen Pop so emotional(the happy emotion, anyways, outside of the finals), it's cool to see.

True. Their playing styles aren't too similar. The most similar player on the Spurs to Elie is Udoka when Udoka is playing well.
I still don't know how Pippen's three-pointer didn't go in. And@ Malik beginning the celebration when Elie caught the ball.
Speculating that Mason is similar to X other Spur is like speculating that Ginobli is similar to a previous Spur. There aren't any apt comparisons. Mason is a unique kind of player.
His 3 point shooting is unique in that his release is damn quick. All the other Spurs, today and in the past require room to take their 3, Mason doesn't appear to need much space. The other strange thing is that his shot doesn't have much arch, it's almost a line drive (w/c I'm surprised at the high percentage).
The man has discovered his own unique system and it looks like its paying big dividends!!
Roger would need to gain some weight and thug up a bit. Elie and Malik's float at the '99 championship river parade was by far the most animated and entertaining.
I respectfully disagree. He does not remind me of Ellie at all. Mason is flashy, he is cool, and he has balls of steel. And not to mention his playing style is quite unique.
Ellie semmed to me straight out of the Army. when on the court, he seemed like a hardass IMO
what I do love about Mason is that no matter if Spurs are winning by 20+ or losing by 20+. He will still have the same ice cold expression.
