Wow...that is a shocker. I hope Tomei wins the best supporting actress. For as much as she showed on camera, she deserves it...ROBERT DOWNEY JR.-TROPIC THUNDER
There's no question that Supporting Actor is going posthumously to Ledger, and it's a deserving performance, but that is one of a strong category this year. Including Robert Downey, Jr. (who I'd actually kind of like to see win the thing, just because comedic performances so rarely get recognition despite being every bit as challenging as dramatic performances).
I was surprised Winslet got nominated in lead actress for "The Reader." And I didn't care for "The Changeling" at all, and I thought Jolie's performance was OK but not Oscar worthy, so I was surprised at that. I am rooting for Anne Hathaway, I think.
I agree with CF about comedy, but Ledger is a sure thing, I think. I did literally laugh out loud at him in Tropic Thunder a few times, and it seems to me that laughing out loud at a movie is so rare these days. Probably cus of all the crap that passes for comedy.
I have a lot of catching up to do.
Did Benjamin Button really deserve that much love?
I didn't really realize how bad a year 2008 was for movies until I saw this list.
Screenplay and Best Actor are a bit of a stretch, in my opinion, but I'm okay with the latter since there's no chance of Brad Pitt winning -- the performance was, I thought, good enough to merit nomination, but not good enough to beat out Richard Jenkins or Mickey Rourke. Best Picture... meh, I didn't think so, but I'm not surprised by the nomination. I was really happy with Taraji P. Henson's Supporting Actress nomination, though.
Also, I didn't notice it right away, but I love, love, love the screenplay nomination for In Bruges. That film should have gotten a bit more love, I think.
Benjamin Button was way too long and boring to be nominated for best picture. It didn't have enough humor. Much of the story was predictable, imo. Maybe you have to read the book to appreciate it.
Typically it helps the case for nomination, really.
WTF? No best picture nomination for WALL-E? that.
Benjamin Button has a good chance to win the awards for such aspects as cinematography, art direction, and visual effects. Do not discount how much the academy likes motion pictures of its type.
Ledger and Rourke are shoo-ins.
Teh gays might give Best Actor to Penn for Milk like they did for Lee & Brokeback Mountain. And they came up with THREE songs from TWO movies. WTF is that , they nominated and awarded 3-6 Mafia one year and they came up with 3 songs. I hope Wally beats that Hadji movie for that category and every one they share a nomination
Part of the double-edged sword that is the Best Animated Feature category -- nice that it ensures animation will always be recognized, but keeps deserving animated films from every being considered for Best Picture.
Iron Man should win every award it's up for, and should have had way more nominations than it did imo.
I like boy for Best Makeup.
Probably the best movie no one has seen this year. I thought it was great, even with Colin Farell.
So Bruce Springsteen wins a Golden Globe but doesn't get an Oscar nomination?
lol dark knight didnt get nominated for best picture, fukn lame....didnt it gross 300m+?
So what, the movie was heavily flawed.
And yeah mono, Benjamin Buttons was really overrated. Fincher is a great director but with such a crappy script there really wasn't much more he could do.
I still can't believe "There Will Be Blood" didn't win best picture.
not really
where's TDK for best picture?!?

I watched Dark Knight again. I understood it better. But that was all that was better.
not really. how does a "heavily flawed movie" break nearly every box office record in history?
-Mars
Economic success doesn't mean a movie was good cinema. Just that people wanted to see it.
