Larry Brown once branded Eddy Curry the cornerstone of the franchise, a center in the Patrick Ewing mold who would dominate the rest of the NBA and lead the Knicks back to prominence.
Big, mobile and talented, Curry seemed to possess all the physical tools to support Brown's bold claim. But three years after the Hall of Fame coach predicted greatness for the young center, Curry's career is now at a crossroads, and his personal life in crisis.
These days, no one is mentioning Curry in the same breath with the league's top big men. Instead, friends, teammates and former coaches wonder if Curry - injured, out of shape and facing unimaginable personal hardship - will ever play again, much less return to being a starting center.
"Who knows what will happen?" Charles Oakley said. "I like Eddy. But you just don't know. He's gone through a lot on and off the court."
Curry's last two seasons have been beset by injuries and personal tragedy. On Saturday, Curry's former girlfriend, the mother of his 3-year-old son, was found shot to death in her Chicago apartment. A relative found the bodies of Nova Henry, 24, and her 9-month-old daughter, Ava, according to Chicago police. Curry's son was found unharmed at the scene. Curry has four children with his wife, Patrice.
In 2007, Curry and Patrice were bound and robbed inside their suburban Chicago mansion, the victims of a home invasion by three assailants. Just two weeks ago, Curry claimed to be a victim when his former driver filed a civil lawsuit accusing Curry of making sexual advances and pointing a loaded gun at him. The ex-driver, David Kuchinsky, also accused Curry of directing racist comments toward him. Curry has denied all claims.
"I can't imagine what he's going through," said Rick Brunson, Curry's friend and former teammate with the Chicago Bulls. "He's always been one of my favorites. He's just a big, joyful kid."
Curry is expected to return home to Chicago for Henry's funeral, but a team source indicated that Curry will be with the Knicks for tonight's home game against the Houston Rockets.
Curry, though, is injured and will not play. The one-time franchise center has appeared in just one game this season due to chronic right knee pain. Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni recently said the 6-11, 320-pound Curry needs to lose weight before he plays.
Curry has told teammates he would welcome a change-of-scenery trade and the Knicks are willing to accommodate him. However, considering Curry's condition and state of mind, a deal is unlikely. Curry, 26, will earn $9.7 million this year and will be paid an additional $22 million through the 2010-11 season.

For Knicks' Eddy Curry, nightmare continues as 3-year-old son left alone for hours with bodies

BY STEPHANIE GASKELL in Chicago and FRANK ISOLA and CHRISTINA BOYLE in New York

Simmons/News Eddy Curry's ex-girlfriend Nova Henry and 9-month-old daughter were found Saturday ...

Giancarli for News ... at this Chicago condo.

Undated Facebook page photo of Nova Henry, ex-girlfriend and mother of 3-year-old son of Curry.

Knicks center Eddy Curry was devastated Sunday night as grisly details emerged from the brutal slaying of his ex-girlfriend and her infant daughter - all witnessed by the 3-year-old son he had with the woman.
"The [boy] was found in a pool of blood," one of Curry's close friends told the Daily News.
"That really upset him. He was really upset that his son had to see that."
Little Noah was found by a relative Saturday night unharmed, the pal said.
Family members said he was walking around in Nova Henry's blood, leaving footprints all over their Chicago home.
Curry, a former Chicago Bulls player, was "deeply saddened" by the slaying and his thoughts and prayers were with the Henry family, he said through his lawyer.
Still, he was expected to join his teammates in Madison Square Garden tonight for their game against the Houston Rockets, a Knicks source said.
The bodies of Henry, 24, and 9-month-old Ava were discovered about 6 p.m. Saturday by Henry's mother, Yolan, when she arrived at her daughter's condo on the city's South Side, police said.
Mother and daughter suffered multiple gunshot wounds, an autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner's office found.
"Two people were discovered shot," said Steve Peterson, deputy superintendent of Chicago's Bureau of Investigative Services.
"This is another example of how domestic violence ends bad."
Cops said they were looking to question a "known acquaintance" of Henry and confirmed she had a restraining order out on a man who family members said was an abusive ex-boyfriend she had broken up with months ago.
Curry, who was in Philadelphia with his team when news of the murders reached him, was not a suspect, a police source said.
"She was scared to death, this guy was forcing his way upon her," Henry's stepuncle Tom Henry said from his Houston home.
"She had a restraining order, but the restraining order didn't stop the bullet from killing her.
"He ... had been physically threatening her, and threatening her through the phones.
"She got another condo. I guess she thought she was safe.
"She was a very beautiful, young lady," he added.
Chicago police refused to confirm if they had anyone in custody Sunday night and said detectives were "working hard" to find the perpetrator of the attack.
Relatives said Curry and Henry met in high school in Chicago and he fathered Noah.
Curry supported the boy, who was believed to be in the care of his maternal grandmother Sunday night. A man who answered the phone at the grandmother's residence refused to comment.
Reports indicate that Henry was also convinced her youngest child, Ava, was his child - even though the Knicks star denied paternity.
Curry is married and has four children with his wife, Patrice - Eddy 3rd, Reign, Reigan and Reiganna, according to the Knicks media guide.
It has been a trying few months for Curry, who has been plagued with a knee injury and forced to sit on the bench since the first game of the season for the Knicks.
Two weeks ago he was also sued by his former driver, who accused him of making sexual advances, forcing him to perform demeaning tasks and pointing a gun at him.
Curry vehemently denies the allegations and alleges the suit was filed by "a disgruntled former employee trying to extort money from his former employer," said Curry's lawyer Kelly Saindon.
In 2007, Curry and his wife were victims of a violent crime when they were bound and robbed at gunpoint in their suburban Chicago mansion by three gun-wielding thugs.

To all the Gold-diggers looking for a payday...

THIS is the place you will live when you birth the child of an NBA player. See the scenic railroad tracks? Beautiful view, yes?

In all seriousness, Curry is getting dealt a ty hand in life, but I tend to think a lot of his problems are self-induced. Why oh why is his baby's momma living in that hole? Do you not make millions of dollars a year?! One would think you want your kid to grow up somewhere better than that, IMO. Guess not.

I feel sorry for him and his family. Just because you live in a not-so-nice area doesnt mean you should expect to be a victim of a crime (especially one so heinous). But as a NBA player, you should have the faculties and support from others to make the best decision, even if Curry in this example isnt able to make the correct one.

I think its tragic, I really do. But would you, as a millionaire, allow your child to live in that condo, in that area? I know I wouldnt, even if the child was had out of wedlock (not saying Curry's was, I am just giving the worst case scenario).

Usually the point you are making could have some merit but this apparently wasn't a random crime due to living in a bad area. This was apparently a domestic dispute involving an ex who had a restraining order. If the coward wanted her dead, I doubt where she was living made much difference.

Does anyone else find it strange that he killed her and the other kid and left Eddy Curry's kid alone? Like the killer wanted to erase her and her baby that he helped father and showed mercy to Curry's baby. If you want to call it that. Whatever the case, I think that kid is not going to be alright for a very long time if ever.

Considering that neither of the articles you posted state that he "left Eddy Curry's kid alone", or indeed anything about what happened other than the results, no, I'm not about to start speculating about his state of mind.

Curry given all the time he needs

The Knicks assured center Eddy Curry "to take the time that he needs" as he copes with the death of his former girlfriend and mother of his 3-year-old son, team president Donnie Walsh said Monday.
