He never gave his word to the Spurs so he didnt sell out. And yeah, one of the reason he presumably stayed was to be with his sick sister and ensure she got the best care.
This affected me, and I don't even have a sister.
I have a daughter, and it's still heartbreaking. Prayers.

i dunno man....treatment will be the same anywhere anyway....tiago had the money probly sent her to the best facility available in spain/brazil where ever it was.....
good luck to tiago and his family...
that is a sad news...God Bless her and Tiago's family. may God take care her in the afterlife. RIP
Looks like he had been a bone marrow donor to her earlier. RIP
The win tonight doesnt seem so great now.
My heart is with the Splitter family. I know what its like to lose family members quite well. Just got my 2 brothers left.
Stay Strong Tiago, you got my love, may your sister rest in peace.
I think that now that the full story, we hould respect Tiago for his decison to stay in Europe.. fans obviously don't know all the considerations that went into his decision but obviously his sister's situation weighed heavily. RIP.
Actually, it was discussed here at the time he made the decision.
RIP
Wow.
Really sad.
R.I.P
from another blog:
The Splitter siblings have longed enjoyed a close relationship. One under-reported aspect of Tiago Splitter’s decision to resign with Tau Ceramica was the care of his sister. Tiago Splitter lives in Spain with his family and Mic e had received medical treatment there. Along with all the other variables of his free agent decision, the advantage of maintaining a stable home life in light of Mic e’s health must have been attractive to the Brazilian center.

It's a sad story no matter who the surviving family members are.
RIP.
Funny how the picture changes when one has more information to work with eh?
To my knowledge, he never made a promise to the Spurs to come here. You can't call him a sellout in that case (and especially given the cir stances).

Condolences to Tiago Splitters and his family.
Our prayers are with them.
Peace.
I'm sorry, did I miss something??
I was jumping the gun and just didn't want someone coming in and saying something insensitive because of the animosity some feel towards Splitter for staying in Europe. In a number of other threads, some posters can be real jerks like the celebrating an opposing players injury or insulting peoples looks in the thread where people are posting their photos.
I jumped the gun as everyone has been respectful.
Life and our loved ones are what is important. We can't let ourselves get too carried away with our joy of following a sports team that we lose sight of that.
Condolences to the family and friends and props to Spurstalk posters.
Yes, that was the principal reason.
RIP.
hopefully she's in a better world now
Damn, that is really sad news. Best wishes to the Splitter family. And prayers.
