Sometimes, things just work out for the best
    By Jeff McDonald

You probably remember the Spurs' hot pursuit of Corey Maggette over the offseason. You probably remember he rebuffed their offer to take a $50 million offer from Golden State.

Well, it appears the Spurs might have dodged a bullet. According to reports out of the Bay Area, Maggette and teammate Jamal Crawford got into a heated exchange during the Spurs' OT win in Oakland on Monday. The topic? Maggette's apparent refusal to pass the ball.

Both players downplayed the incident Thursday.

Maggette has always been a prolific scorer. He is averaging 19.4 points in his first season with the Warriors. But these kind of charges of selfishness -- shoot first, ask questions later -- have dogged him throughout his career.

You could always make the argument that he would have been fine in San Antonio. Playing with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginboili, Tony Parker, et al seems to usually put players into their best behavior.

But right now, it's looking like the Spurs lucked out when Maggette chose the Bay Area over the River Walk. Not only did the Spurs avoid a potential locker-room headache, but they were able to sign Roger Mason Jr. instead.

This fits in with a pattern of "luck" over the years -- Jason Kidd, Grant Hill, Chris Webber, Jermaine Oneal -- all FAs the that Spurs pursued with (thankfully) no success.

Add JR Smith to your list of "dodged a bullet" ... but there were some regretted signings that cost the Spurs a bunch... most recently...

    Jackie Butler
    Francisco Elson

Butler, yes -- arguably cost Scola to rid themselves.

But Elson was a tiny short-term deal for a player that contributed more than expected.

You mean the same JR Smith that is playing less minutes but is averaging more points/rebs/assists/steals per game than Roger Mason?

He ain't that bad. GK just throws him under the bus after every game.

If GK would wake up and start JR, he would be a solid 20/5/5 player.....

And that's all JR wants (which is why Karl won't).

agreed! better than all spurs players in the number of attempted shots/game. better than all other spurs in destroying a team coz he's a low-IQ, me-first player.

Hill would have been a perfect fit with the Spurs.. at least the Hill that's curently playing for the Suns.
