The San Antonio Spurs announced today (June 21, 2006) that they have acquired Matt Bonner, Eric Williams and a 2009 second round draft pick from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Rasho Nesterovic.

Kurt Thomas, at the time of the trade, would probably be their most recent "power move". Did it turn out that way? it wasnt as effective as the Spurs where probably hoping, but at that time it seemed like a steal.

This is THE SPURS we are talking about people!

Seriously, SPURS! My favorite sports franchise in the world (and in my hometown). If we dared step one toe over the luxury tax, we might have had two more les. But Pop treats the owners' money like if it was his own! Imagine that, a GM you can trust with your money.

Let me put it this way: WE (SUPRS) are a small market team. WE are the most careful team in terms of money management/payroll. WE might have won an extra le or two if we rented a player for a season here and there when WE were THE top dog. If WE didn't cross the lux tax threshold THEN, why now when the economy is forcing teams with previously much looser payroll care to look to sell their big contracts?

Money is tight now, luxury boxes aren't selling like they used to, Nba owners are losing money and we are small market and have some of the best people at maximizing profits handling the payroll.

In other words, don't hold your breath for a big splash in free agency by tomorrow.

I agree the team is a fundamental team and the front office is very conservative.

when was the last time we won a championship?

some of you ers act like were the worst piece of franchise thats never done anything right.

you do understand that there are 29 other teams to compete with right? it is not possible to make a major move at the touch of a button. those who do not understand this probably should not own their own business.

It was definately the Kurt Thomas trade. In hindsite, sure, it didnt work out as well as we had hoped, but at the Time it was definately the most recent power trade. Hind sight is 20/20 as they say but think back to that time, it was an awesome trade.

Thats a good one too but I think the theme of the thread is focusing on the trade deadline and it was definately Kurt Thomas.

Alvin for TC in '89 turned out to be a pretty good deal. Not on talent, but Alvin's life was sadly falling apart and that distraction would have been a horrible thing for this franchise to bring David into.

Still, the second greatest trade would have to be Pop's first: Bill Curley to Detroit for Sean Elliott. Obviously #1 is trading some magic beans to Virginia for Ice.

More relevant question -- when was the last time the Spurs got burned making a power trade move? (Think Kidd, Grant Hill, Webber, etc.)
