The Arizona Republic
It might have been hard to tell from the 128-108 spanking the Suns took from the Celtics Sunday, but they have been much more active defensively since Alvin Gentry took over as head coach.
Even with Sunday's performance, the Suns are averaging almost three more steals per game than they did before the All-Star break. That has helped fuel their running game.
Center Shaquille O'Neal said it's a matter of simplification.
"It's because we're switching, and we know what to do," he said. "The reason guys were having problems knowing the rotations is because they would change every five minutes. Now we're sticking with one thing."
Unfortunately, the Celtics cleaned up some early turnover problems and then dominated.
"It was a good test for us," O'Neal said. "We still have to play our style, but against a team like that we've got to make stops. A team with so many weapons, you can't let all their weapons get off. If we want to talk about winning, that's how we've got to play."
Newsflash Bob Young: The Celtics just shot 63% without their best player and had their season high for points, if you're gonna write an assonine article, at least try to time it better.

Good question, I'm wondering how one gets to be a writer for the AZ republic, it seems like a certain lack of intelligence is required.
And saying that their defense is better because they're getting more steals demonstrates a complete lack of basketball understanding. For every time they gamble on D and get lucky with a steal, there are probably 5-6 times where the gamble leads to an easy bucket for the other team. Steals and blocks are both extremely overrated stats.
Wow...
So beating a depleted Clippers squad and a Kevin Durant Thunder makes the Arizona Republic writers wet...![]()
Sarver must have left an envelope on Bob Young's desk with instructions and an undisclosed amount of money. Yesterday's game against the Celtics was the worst defensive performance I've seen all year.
I find this article offensive.

If they keep making strides like last night poor Defense will be completely dead real soon now...
Wow. I'd hate to see what NOT making strides looks like.
LOL, that's my thought. If they have improved their defense then wtf would their defense be if it got worse?
Intended ?![]()
Xylus is right, this article is offensive. How in dumb do the AZ writers think we are?
Dumb enough to post it on an internet message board and talk about it apparently.
Am I the only one thinking this writer was sarcastic the whole way. IMO even Phoenix writers are laughing at the Suns
Hey 21 Palins, that post made no sense. I meant dumb enough to actually think the Sun's defense is improving.
Ya you are, and you would understand why if you knew this writer's history with re ed homer articles.
The only strides on the Suns defense are those taken by the opposing players running over it...
Throw in Paula Boivin to that list of ty writers.
What the Suns kept on doing was making strides back to their court while their man is still shooting the ball. I guess their defensive scheme is to just outscore their opponents. It worked well against scrubs but didnt work out so well against a playoff team...
I'd give you more thumbs up but there's a limit
I swore I heard some faint chants during the suns celtics game from the fans... clap clap defense clap clap defense... but I was also on vicodin so i was probably just hearing .
Na I was at the game and I couldn't believe that I actually heard the old couple next to me act like they were actually at a basketball game.
I wish the crowds at Phoenix games were like that of LA, Boston, Oakland, Portland, or Utah![]()
LA? I don't think they are that rowdy or cheer, unless it's down to the wire. Portland and Utah I definitely agree.
Yeah maybe I shouldn't have put that there, but LA undoubtedly has a better home crowd than Phoenix.
And Oakland has the craziest crowds ever. Everyone in the crowd standing the entire game wearing those "we believe" T-shirts clearly affected Dallas.
