I actually was enjoying the lack of politics in this year's Oscars, and then Penn won. It seems to me like he got some votes not as much for his performance as for some notion that a vote for him showed support for gay rights and especially gay marriage. You can't fight hate with more hate and that is how the end of his speech sounded to me.

Agreed. Though they could have done the same thing with Brokeback Mountain for best pic in 2005 (the odds-on favorite at the time) but went with Crash instead, which had the less risque social message.

I was glad Sean Penn. He continues to be one of my favorite actors and hise speech didn't bother me at all. He was awesome in MILK.

I've always been a Sean Penn fan and I was hoping all along he'd win. As far as his speech, I don't have a problem with those celebrities pushing their agendas on the podium; I think it displays an awareness, when they could easily exist in a bubble.

I hated how they didn't show clips of the nominated actors during those awards. The intros by past winners were fine and all but I really missed seeing highlights of the performances.

Yea! I think it's funny that all over tv today people are marveling at what he can do! I guess the mainstream knows him for movies, but his real success is as a Tony award winning song and dance Broadway performer.

Did anybody actually watch the thing start to finish? I put it on for 3 minutes watching Ben Stiller impersonate Phoenix on Letterman and I couldn't watch any more. I think my all time personal record for watching an awards show is 45 min.

no. I just checked in on it every so often and only kept watching when they were giving a substantive award.

I simply think there is a huge difference between:

"...no matter what everyone tells you, God does love you, and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights federally across this great nation of ours."

    and

"anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way of support."

Every time I see Rourke give an interview, I'm less impressed with his performance in The Wrestler... It was good and all, but maybe not much that of a stretch for him. I haven't seen Milk but for now I can't really begrudge Penn.

The awards I had the biggest problems with (and only because I filled out a ballot for a contest) was Best Makeup. How does Benjamin Button win that over boy? A huge part of the "aging" effect in BB was achieved with CG and lighting. I thought the makeup was actually pretty bad when it could be seen in detail.

    SEAN PENN BABY!!!
That's #3!!!! Although, I think he should have four. He was robbed for Dead Man Walking- Nick Cage won that year I believe for Leaving Las Vegas.
Nic Cage deserved that Oscar. I can't stand most of his recent work, but his performance in Leaving Las Vegas was amazing.

Loved his win. Loved the film, loved his performance, loved his acceptance speech, loved the whole lot of it. I teared up, and everything.

I haven't seen the Wrestler (looks like a movie I would enjoy though), soI can't say anything. I think Penn is a great actor, I've seen Milk and thought that he did a really grat job.

I don't think that Milk was an amazing movie though. (just good.)

I'm glad that Heath and Kate Winlet finally got their Oscars

Yes. I feel that those who fight against anyone's basic human rights should be shamed.

Yes you're right, those are 2 different ways of saying the same thing. I suppose it's a reflection of each one's personality. But those are the kind of messages that will need to be delivered a zillion more times in a zillion more ways to finally achieve a common goal. I guess I just believe that it was their moment, and they could use it however they pleased; and I prefer those kind of messages to a "me,me,me" platform.

and it was her 6th nomination, that would have sucked if she lost again.

Just saw Slumdog Millionaire tonight. That movie earned every award it took home, and maybe should have received a couple more. I can't recall the last time I left a movie theatre feeling that good. When I watched the Oscars last night, I had hoped that Milk would win it (loved that film, too), but I've changed my mind.

Best movie I've seen since There Will Be Blood, and even then I might consider Slumdog a better movie.

I watched Milk last night and I have to say that even though Penn won Best Actor, I think his performance might still be underrated. He was that good, and while I loved Rourke in The Wrestler, IMO they weren't even close... The fact that it was even a question that Penn would win it makes the performance underrated.

In hindsight, I wouldn't have batted an eye if Milk had won Best Picture. Just a fantastic all-around movie.
