So you remember the presentation where he broke down the word every which way,
I wrote that part down...as that was the part that was surprising to me. Lo and behold it is surprising to Argentines as well.

I wrote down Costa and Argente = Argentina.

but you don't actually remember anything he said. Convenient. And you're wondering why you got an F ?
Well I was shocked I got an F...first test I failed to pass since I was 17 or so. But I know why...and it had everything to do with the verbs...

Plus the sucker wrote the directions on the test in Spanish. He translated them on a previous handout but I never looked at that handout before taking the test.

I disagree with many things with the Argentina's government, and said so repeatedly. That said, if you're going to pretend to de-authorize a tourism site from said government that has no motive whatsoever to be lying about the origins of a word, you need to provide ANYTHING that counters their argument. You know, some tangible rebuttal or evidence to the contrary. Otherwise, you're just yapping empty words as usual.
Dude you are a ing idiot if you consider a government as a good source for historical accuracy...all history is biased, but goverment history is the most biased of them all...

    Idiot.

The only logic gap is that it directly contradicts your account of a French background to the name.
No it really doesn't...since Argente was derived from Argentum....and you are posting summaries.

What it is, what everything you have posted is...is a historical summary at best. Hardly detailed information of the sort you would get from a PHD in linguistics.

The burden of presenting evidence is now on your side. I said he was wrong and presented factual accounts demonstrating so. If you're going to argue that, then you need to bring more than your opinion. Something you have not done yet.

No no no stupid ...at no point have I presented myself as an expert or informed source on this subject...in fact I've gone to great lengths to make it clear that I am not...

It is you has made that claim, you did it when you challenged the statement I made in the manner in which you did...wikiboy.

Therefore, I don't have to prove ..you do. And so far you have posted wiki articles, cited governments as unimpeachable sources of history...and said French and Spanish are descended from Latin. I don't think you know much more about this than I do...difference is you think you know a great deal more. That is the epitome of an idiot.

In short...you are just as I say you are, someone who knows very little and and because of that thinks he knows a great deal...me? In this instance I amn not someone who thinks he knows a great deal...but what I do know, is you are an idiot. On that I have no doubts.

I am off to class now...I'll have the info when I return.

I take a look at the RAE site (Real Academia Española), the mother of all spanish dictionaries:
    http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltCons...LEMA=argentina

"Argentina" it's a synonym of "argenteo", which means actually "made of silver"

What is really funny is that a possible correct translation of "Silver Spurs" is ESPUELAS ARGENTINAS !!

You're bound to the argies, Whottt! Face it!

Argenteo? French = Argente? And we get one step closer to the truth. Thank you

Thank you also mother of all spanish dictionaries.

So what made it go from the masculine Argenteo(I think this is hte word I was looking for when I was saying Argentino earlier) to the feminine Argentina?

La Costa? It damn sure wasn't El Rio.

and please don''t say Plata had anything to do with it...that's combining two words that mean silver...that would be stupid and unnecessary, since they already had a word from their own language that meant that. They'd have just used a variation on plata if that's what they wanted.

What's cool is Dario Argento's last name I think means silver in Italian...which is cool.

I don't know. I do know "argent" in french means money, which in spanish is dinero or plata.

    >So what made it go from the masculine Argenteo(I think this is hte word I was looking for when I was saying Argentino earlier) to the feminine Argentina?

I don't know for sure either. I'm just guessing. The spanish found lots of Silver here, that's why the called the river "Rio de la Plata", because that's was where the shipped all the silver to Spain.

    >La Costa? It damn sure wasn't El Rio.

Maybe it was the land or the zone, both feminine words in spanish (tierra, zona). But I'm just guessing again.

    >and please don''t say Plata had anything to do with it...that's combining two words that mean silver...that would be stupid and unnecessary, since they already had a word from their own language that meant that. They'd have just used a variation on plata if that's what they wanted.

Well, that's what the synonyms are for, isn't it? To call the same thing with another word. Maybe it came from the french, I don't know. But it doesn't make it less spanish. A lots of words in every languaje come from another one.

    >What's cool is Dario Argento's last name I think means silver in Italian...which is cool.
Yes it is. Argento rules, and her daughter too.

I gotta give the latins credit...they make by far the best horror movies currently. One of the main reasons I wanted to take Spanish is because I want to be able to watch Guillermo Del Toro's movies without sub les. Probably need to take Italian at some point also so I can watch Argento's old stuff without the dubbing.

Argentina comes from "Argentum" which is Silver. The Spaniards thought when they first came to Buenos Aires that the country was filled with silver, after search they found no silver at all.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but if you actually took the time to go to the RAE website, it actually says argénteo comes from the Latin word argentĕus.

Please. We're not talking political history here. Enlighten us how Argentina would have any motive to lie about the origins of the country's name...
Don't be disingenuous. This is not to mention it actually matches perfectly with all the other accounts posted here, which shot your Frenchie theory into thin air.

No it really doesn't...since Argente was derived from Argentum....and you are posting summaries.

What it is, what everything you have posted is...is a historical summary at best. Hardly detailed information of the sort you would get from a PHD in linguistics.
It's the only available historical account of the origins of the country name. Are we to believe your PHD professor lived in the 1500's and has a first hand account of what transpired then, and somehow nobody else found out about it? This is the kind of delusion you're walking on right now.

No no no stupid ...at no point have I presented myself as an expert or informed source on this subject...in fact I've gone to great lengths to make it clear that I am not...
But you keep spewing the bull like you know what you're talking about. Expect to get called out for it. If you instead would shut your trap, we wouldn't be here in the first place.

You can also go back and look and see at no point was I claiming to be an expert opinion on the subject. You can also see you calling me full of which often means deliberate deceitful, which would be incorrect in this case.
Your lack of claims of expertise sure didn't stop you from posting garbage, nor did it stop you from clinging into said garbage after being called out for it.

Furthermore, you can also see you presenting yourself as an expert on the subject and then when given a stage you open with Spanish and French are latin languages. And absolutely no one was impressed other than yourself.
Quote where I claimed that? I want to see the whole quote claiming to be an expert on the subject. Wait, you can't find it? , I wonder why.

You are incomparably stupid if you think that was actually a request for help to shut you up. It was a ing joke, as it was obviously request that would never be met.
Sure it wasn't. Nobody here can't read english now.

Unlike you...my presence was requested in this thread. Why are you still here?

Realize this...you are El Nono...and no one ever requests your presence in threads. Play to that audience sucker.
LOL, pulling the my opinion is valuable card. Stop overrating yourself.
Unfortunately for you, your account is entirely not true. Your very first post in this thread is this one: here

And surprise, surprise, it's entirely unsolicited. I know what you're thinking, 'damn these internets keeping all my posts'. Or maybe it's that short memory problem hitting you again?. Gotta take your meds!

Plus I already answered the reason I'm here having this conversation with you in this post.

Alrighht I am back...first of all, El Nono...go suck a . You are so ing ignorant and have such poor comprehension it isn't even funny. Seriously, put a gun in your mouth, pull the trigger, and make the world a less stupid place.

Seriously...you are ing ignorant. I never presented myself as an expert on this subject, by definition the fact that I am taking a Spanish class and discussing how to speak it better when you interjected your dumbass into the conversation, makes it readily apparent. Secondly...I was indeed joking when I made that comment to Walter Benitez...I didn't expect you to shut your stupid ing hole and admit I am better than you...I wouldn't expect that much of you.

It was a joke..and you are an idiot, at no point was I claiming to be an expert...in fact I was willing to listen to your explanation, and upon hearing you begin I realized the overwhelming stupidity contained in your stupid ing dome an rejected the idea that you might have exceptional insight...in fact I reject it even more after your last post. And you still have provided none...

    So anyway...

No where were we...oh yeah, I went to class tonight.

I want you pay attention to this El Nono...I know you will think you somehow have something to do with what I am about to do...but trust me you do not, you have an extremely weak character...and it is all yours. And no one can make it stronger, just as no one can make anothers weaker.

And the difference between you and I is that I am not afraid to admit I am wrong...no matter how big of an ignorant head you might(still) be.

Anyway...the word does indeed descend from the Latin word Argentum and not the French version of the word. And I didn't write it down wrong or mishear him the first time either. He made a mistake when he used the French instesd of the Latin...and did the exact same thing tonight at the beginning of the story and it was only when I pressed him for more details that he caught it. He speaks 6 languages...so I guess one would get them confused at some point.

And BTW it also does indeed become feminine from the word Costa, and I pressed him on this...and it's because that river does run along the coast. Kill me for not having the exact details because this was after class and he was explaining it as we were walking to the cars. But I think he mentioned that could see the river running alonside the coast when you are viewing it from the sea.

He said some about Uraguay too as he was describing just where it ran, (he was pretty much talking to himself at this point) but I don't remember what it was.

    And there is your story...

Dude, I don't think I am an expert on anything to do with the Spanish Language, in fact I have said it dozens of times...you seem to think you have accomplished something great. And you certainly seem proud of yourself. I've been taking Spanish for 6 weeks more or less and haven't exactly been a good student up to this point. I never presented myself as an expert on the subject.

at wottt getting owned by Argies again.
    Looks like it never ends.

La Profesora...I already posted the stats that show Scola, Scola alone of every starter on the Rockets, is the only with a negative Roland rating.

Not TMac, not Battier, not Yao, not Artest...just Scola.

That's basically an impossible achievement...he plays most of his minutes with players that have a positive Roland rating yet he has a negative one...

And what that means is, they do a better job of outscoring their opponents when he is off the court, than they do when he is on it. Inspite of the fact that he is almost always surrounded by the best players on the team in Roland rating.

That is a complete and total confirmation of the main criticism I have made of Scola...that he doesn't improve his team. That he doesn't do in fact. And is therefore not worth all the ing la murjeres have done about him.

And there is not a shred of evidence you can show me that the Rockets are a better team since he started playing for them.

But I can show you evidence they are worse...and I can show you evidence they are a better team without him.

Bonner OTOH actually has a positive one...the Spurs are better with him on the court than they are with him off it.

As for the about the name Argentina...I'll say it for the one millionth time, I am not an expert on things Argentine, nor have I ever claimed to be.

Here's what I know about Argentina...they don't pay their bills. They produce an inordinate amount of homer assholes. These are the things I would say I know with all certainty...and I'd be 100% right on both of those statements, everything else would be the opinion of a neophyte on things Argentine.

I dont need to look up at no numbers here, eventhough numbers show a part of the game,it doesnt show the intangibles and BBIQ.(which is important when you play for the Spurs).
Me,as a BB fan and ex-BB player, when I look at Bonner's style of play and his robotic moves(eventhough He's been pretty good with his 3 pt shot)and them I watch Scola´s moves in the low post, his rebounding, mid-range jumper and all the little things that don´t show on the stat sheet that brings Scola to the table(read:really High BBIQ and understandment of the game) makes me think that we actually could've been in a diferent possition to mutchup better with the Lakers.
Scola can Guard guys like Odom or Dirk(it's been proven already) unfortunelly Bonner, not Fabs or KT can do it like He does.
Too bad He got traded to the rockets for a bag of peanuts(V-Spam)
Bottomline Scola is a way better overall player tham Bonner is,and Yes, the spurs could've done more with him tham what they get from Bonner,Period.

so stats aren't important? Fine,..then shut the about them. They either matter or they don't...you can't just ignore the ones you don't like and post the ones you do, and saying you are proving something. At least have the balls to show up when Bonner hands Scola his ass....like he did earlier this season.

Scola starts on a not very good team, so I don't know why you idiots get amazed whenever he has decent numbers in a game. It's like because he doesn't completely suck statistically you guys think he's Wilt Chamberlain or something. And accordingly.

You guys need to understand...Scola is the one who got the worst end of this trade. Ask him how the Spurs and Bonner's ass tastes...since he's done nothing but look up at it in the standings since the day he entered the leage.
