you also have to consider that he doesn't know any of the players he was playing with..he doesn't know their tendencies on D, so even if he does turn out to be decent enough on D, it'll take him at least a few more weeks..

Of all basketball fans, I'd never expect the Spurs fans to be the ones to fall in love so quickly with a player like Pops Mensah-Bonsu. He's clueless defensively, he's much better suited to play for an uptempo team, he struggles to do simple fundamental things like pivot off a screen or to guard the post on side-denial, but he makes a few dunks and he suddenly becomes pathetically overpraised? You should know better. Or maybe not, you've never gone through the likes of Dee Brown, Ron Mercer or, even worse, Kendrick Brown and Gerald Green...

Yeah, I'm aware of that, but I'm pretty sure the expectations level was quite different...

Didn't you understand the meaning of the sentence? Who cares if Mercer played a couple of games for the Spurs later on? Was he still able to dunk at that point of his career? The point remains.

Pops did well on his first outing against scrubs. Whether he will contribute on a regular basis will depend on Coach Pop. I liked the energy that he brought and he has picked up some basics plays that the team runs from his time playing with the Austin Toros. He is not the big that I would have liked to see us add, but he is long and can help us with rebounds. Let's see what he can do against starters if he is given the chance by Coach Pop. GSG!!!

I hope we keep him the rest of the season and sign him for next year too....

    Just think of this lineup

    C - Mahimni
    PF - Pops
    SF - Gist
    SG - Hairston
    PG - Hill
    Sick, absolutely sick.......

The only question I'd have is how their defense will come along. All of them can score the ball thats for sure.

Most know he has alot of deficiencies - but even with that he brings the Spurs something they dont have. Length, athleticism and energy at the 4. Hes not the caliber of player of these guys, but players like Landry, Bass and Leon Powe are all extrememly limited as basketball players, but they make up for it with toughness, energy, hustle and athleticism - and bring alot to their teams.

I can see his future play as being stipulated. When our frontline can't keep up with a smaller or more athletic line up then he is key. Then you have garbage time for blow outs. Either way good to have in the arsenal. I like his desire for the ball.

I think Kurt Thomas and Pops would be great complement.

    Fabs alley oop to Pops????????

Defensive rotations > monster man dunks
The Spurs don't care one iota about monster dunks. Pops was regularly out of position on defensive rotations. I realize that the Spurs defense is probably the most difficult in the league to learn, but Pops is not going to get any meaningful minutes short of injury or major foul trouble the rest of the season. Everyone needs to put down the crack pipe. By the time he got in the game the outcome was decided. The Cavs defense wasn't playing with the intensity it did to start the game. Hey, I hope he turns into the second coming of David Robinson, but to judge anything off of his performance Friday night is merely wishful thinking.

You'd be the only one jackass, we only hope he can learn the system with those who get actual minutes in the next couple of weeks. No one expects anything outside of his limitations, except you.

Outside of Tim, none of our post players have a well rounded game. They all have strengths and weaknesses.

Fab and Bonner can't rebound to save their lives. Our inability to get offensive rebounds hurts us.

Pops, despite his many fundamental shortcomings, can rebound. It's up to Pop how he uses all our post players. Up until very recently we were going with a 3 man post rotation. That's almost like a playoff rotation. We can't keep that up. To me it isn't inconceivable that Coach throw Pops in the game if no one else is playing well and rebounding is needed.

If Pops shows a dedication to learning and the right at ude, even if he makes mistakes, then I think the Coach Pop might give him more chances. How much? Who knows?

I agree; we badly need athleticism in the paint to complement Duncan.

Sometimes, coaches shouldn't be afraid of throwing a raw athlete in the battle, if it that addresses a big need.

Sometimes, it can pay off really well; It has already happened: a coach trusting a young player, even if he is lacking this and that; trust is huge

Should Pops Mensah-Bonsu have a bigger role in tonights game versus the Portland Trail Blazzers? If so and performs great like Friday versus the Cavaliers should he be signed to a contract?
