gooden seems like a great find. BUT the hernia thing is scary, what if he ends up being out of action? entirely possible.

due to this we MUST keep POPS, who isnt injured and gives us an explosive inside presence in case Gooden has to be out.

Wouldn't be surprised at all to see that happen. If Gooden is two weeks or more away from being able to play then there's no rush to sign him.

True-I just hope it's not surgery or he's out 8 weeks. When do the playoffs start-the end of April?

If Pop is only playing him during scrub-time in blowouts, he's not really giving us anything, is he? The Spurs aren't cutting Udoka or Vaughn, so there's really no point in getting all bent out of shape. Bye Pops, we hardly knew ye.

Is that so? I thought he needed to be signed ASAP so he's eligible for the playoffs?

I hope we retain pops, he's the explosive player that we need at the moment. Not to mention, he could blossom into something great.......then again, he could become like Francisco Elson. Either way, pops needs to be retained.

regardless of whether Gooden plays zero games for the Spurs or becomes Antoine Carr reincarnate...

there's a 99.99999999% chance that Pops will be completely irrelevant to the Spurs' playoff success.

he's got the ability to exceed it, but if you set Elson's career as the benchmark right now for Pops, I'd bet the under. he's got a long way to go just to match that.

Whatever happens, I have to applaud the Front Office of the Spurs. First, they find and assign Pops to their d league affiliate, where he quickly becomes the best player in that league, statistically. Then a few guys get waived-- Joe Smith, Gooden, Swift-- and the Spurs are able to secure a commitment from the best of those three to play for them. They were tempted to trade away some young talent just before the trade deadline, but decided against it, which was also a good move. The added depth can only help at this point. Even if something out of the blue happened, like Bonner or Thomas getting injured, the Spurs could possibly go with Gooden and Mahinmi, even if both are freshly recovered from injuries. It certainly beats the prospect of trying to win games in the playoffs with a small ball line up that includes even limited minutes of Finley or Udoka at PF.

no, no. others might sign him. if the spurs are already at the 15-man limit, somebody needs to be let go if the spurs want to keep Pops on the roster. the good news is, whoever that somebody is won't be eligible to play in the playoffs since march 1 has come and gone.

so question now is who do the spurs cut in favor of an unproven d-leaguer?

The rule is that you can't be on one team after March 1st and then be eligible for the playoffs for another team. The rush was for Gooden to get waived by March 1st, but the Spurs could wait and sign him on the last day of the regular season if they wanted to.
