Hey Nolan, you know what would bring fans to the stadium? Spending some ing money and getting some pitching. There's a load of quality pitching available this offseason and we haven't heard so much as a peep.
First move was trading Laird to the Tigers...2nd move was upgrading the ballpark w/ $4million in revoations...

ARLINGTON -- The famous dot race, a staple at Rangers home games for over 20 years, will finally be seen from every seat at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
So will a replay of that great catch by Josh Hamilton or a game-winning hit by Michael Young.
That's the main motivation behind $4 million of improvements -- authorized by owner Tom Hicks -- that are being made at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Four new full-color scoreboards are being installed for the 2009 season, including one that will replace the manual out-of-town scoreboard on the left-field wall.
That scoreboard will have a video screen for the dot race, replays and other video features that were currently shown only on the scoreboard atop the right-field porch. That video wasn't visible to people sitting underneath in the Home Run Porch. The left-field scoreboard will take care of that while still having out-of-town scores.
"I really feel what we've done under the current economic conditions is that Tom is committed to making the ballpark experience better for fans," Rangers president Nolan Ryan said on Tuesday. "Hopefully, fans will come out and see the new scoreboards and seats and see that we're committed to the experience at the ballpark. Hopefully, by enhancing the experience, we'll have more fans come out to the ballpark."
A second full-color scoreboard will be installed on the second level of left field, just below the Diamond Club. That will replace the old scoreboard that had pitch counts, speed of pitches and other baseball information.
"It will have the same information and more because we will have more room," Rangers vice president Chuck Morgan said.
Two other new scoreboards will be installed. These are both linear ribbon boards. One will run from foul pole-to-foul pole on the face of the second deck just below the lower-level suites. The other will be on the façade of the second deck on the Home Run Porch in right field.
Both will be used to convey baseball information, scores and advertising.
"We think from an architectural design, our ballpark is as pretty of a stadium as there is in baseball," Ryan said. "We're trying to balance having the best up-to-date scoreboards that are available to enhance the fan experience, while maintaining that step-back-in-time feeling that you have at Wrigley. We feel like we've accomplished that."
The Rangers are also installing 91 premium seats in front of home plate and another 66 seats with the addition of a "Commissioner's Box" just beyond the third-base dugout where the tarp used to be.
The 91 seats in front of home plate will be in two rows running from dugout-to-dugout. This is the first time the Rangers have installed premium seating that is available in every other ballpark. Both the home plate and Commissioner Seats will be available in February after current season-ticket holders have a chance to upgrade.
The Rangers also announced they are widening the home-plate screen an extra 50 feet so that it will run from one photo well to another next to the dugouts.
"We want to make sure that fans sitting in the locations closest to home plate are adequately protected from foul balls and broken bats," Ryan said.

I support Ron Washington, I support Jon Daniels, and I support Nolan Ryan. They all are a good thing for the Rangers, imo. But until Tom Hicks sells the team, the Rangers will never be a consistently good team. I still say they make the playoffs in the next year or two, but considering the market they're in, they should be a Red Sox/Mets/Dodgers level team.
The thing that pisses me off is the fact that Hicks can hide behind his dumbass "Hey, we spent money on Chan Ho Park, and almost spent money on Barry Zito. Therefore, spending money on pitching is never a good idea!" excuse, which hides his real motives.
I love the Rangers but when they say come out and see the ing scoreboards and new seats that pisses me off....WTF!!!!
Im not gonna say they should use that money on players bc many fans have ed about the video layout at the ballpark. its pretty ty when you compare it to all the new parks out there....but that quote from Nolan is maddening, he has turned in Hicks
The Rangers could still play in Arlington Stadium and I would go as long as they field a winning team

Rangers Won't Contend Until 2010?

Star-Telegram - Management in Texas has been hesitant to put a timetable on when they expect to contend in the American League again, but recent comments indicate that it won't be for another season.
"We could be a second-half club in 2009," general manager Jon Daniels said, "assuming some of our young players are ready to come up and help. I could see us making a push by then."
Daniels went on to note that 2010 was probably more realistic.
The Rangers can be out from under around $40 million in contracts owed to Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, Hank Blalock, Joaquin Benoit, Frank Catalanotto and Marlon Byrd by then
If they stay healthy, they can contend in 2009, the Angels have holes in their armor and some real albatross contracts. Yeah, 2010 is more likely but I wouldn't rule out 2009. Worst-case I think they finish 2nd again but above .500 and giving the Angels a run for their money.

Rangers sign Turnbow, Daigle, Ramirez
ARLINGTON -- The Rangers celebrated the New Year by adding three pitchers to their Spring Training roster, including a potential closer and two pitchers who have some experience as a starter in the big leagues.
The Rangers announced on Thursday that they have signed pitchers Derrick Turnbow, Casey Daigle and Elizardo Ramirez to Minor League contracts and invited them to Spring Training.
Turnbow gives the Rangers a possible option at closer while Daigle and Ramirez have both started and relieved at the Major League level.
Turnbow has been a premier closer in the Major Leagues for at least a short period of time. The Brewers acquired him off waivers from the Angels in 2004 and he was Milwaukee's closer in 2005, going 7-1 with a 1.74 ERA and 39 saves in 69 games.
He started off strong in 2006 and was named to the National League All-Star team but faded in the second half. That's when the Brewers acquired Francisco Cordero from the Rangers.
Turnbow started the season with the Brewers in 2008 but struggled with his control, walking 13 in 6 1/3 innings over eight appearances before being sent to the Minor Leagues. He ended up developing tendinitis in his right shoulder and missed most of the second half of the season.
Turnbow, who was recommended by new Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux, is a power pitcher who has struck out 265 batters in 2572/3 innings in his Major League career and held opponents to a .218 batting average. But he has also walked 5.9 batters per nine innings.
He could compete with Frank Francisco and C.J. Wilson to be the Rangers closer or win a job as a setup reliever. But he has much to show before that happens.
"He a little bit of a wild card," Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine said. "Without Mike's endorsement, I don't know if he would have been the fit that he ultimately was but he's not far removed from being a very productive back-of-the-bullpen reliever. We're going to give him the opportunity but he'll still have to earn it by proving he's healthy and can throw strikes and regain the form he had a few years ago."
Turnbow basically was dealing with a muscular imbalance in his shoulder that altered and disrupted his mechanics. He has been on a strength and conditioning program since July and has been throwing during the offseason.
"He's currently throwing long-toss three times a week from 120 feet," said his agent Damon Lapa. "He's been throwing three days a week since the beginning of December and anticipates getting on the mound in the next 2-21/2 weeks, which should put him at 100 percent for the start of Spring Training."
Turnbow will likely come into Arlington later this month so the Rangers can get a better feel for where he's at as far as his health.
"The medical reports don't give us any cause for long-term or medium-term concern," Levine said. "It's just a matter of when he's ready to start throwing again. He expects to be at full tilt, it's just a matter of us concurring with that."
Daigle and Ramirez provide the Rangers with some depth for their starting rotation and some experience at Triple-A Oklahoma. Levine said the Rangers don't expect to sign a high number of Minor League free agents but wanted a couple to go with the many young arms they expect to have at the upper levels of their farm system.
Daigle spent last season with Triple-A Rochester in the Minnesota organization, going 1-5 with a 3.78 ERA and one save in 44 games. He made 10 starts for the Diamondbacks in 2004, going 2-3 with a 7.16 ERA. He also made 10 relief appearances for them in 2006 with a 3.65 ERA.
"He has an upside arm who has had some success before," Levine said.
Ramirez was 10-7 with a 4.50 ERA in 27 games, including 23 starts, at Triple-A Oklahoma as he led the RedHawks staff in wins, starts, innings and strikeouts. He also made one relief appearance for the Rangers and has a career record of 4-15 with a 6.40 ERA in 39 games, including 26 starts, with the Rangers, Reds and Phillies.
"He pitched well for us last year," Levine said. "He was very versatile and he's a consummate pro. He was a priority for us to re-sign."
The Rangers now have six non-roster pitchers coming to camp, including right-handers Doug Mathis and Brian Gordon and left-hander Joe Torres.

If the Rangers come out of the gates hot and go atleast 500 or better we have a chance to take the division.

Beyond all doubt the Rangers will make the playoffs this year and have the best team in Rangers history. The Nolan effect will be felt now!
