One dunk like that and he's riding the pine.

That's partially what got Pops shipped outta here. Hairston also better be careful. A couple of more dunks and he'll be sent away, too.

I remember some bone headed plays from Gooden when he was with the Cavs. Of course, we're used to it with Bonner sometimes.

Gooden should start and get starters minutes and Bonner should come off the bench.
Spurs need rebounds more than a big shooting 3 pointers.

Mods - feel free to merge.

I think the pick-up is an excellent one for the Spurs. For a short time I covered the Cavs and Drew was always a great interview and guy around the lockerroom. Real laid back and honest - didn't give standard answers nor did he put on a show. Just a cool guy. The SA media should love him.

His game? He's going to be great on the glass - especially offensivesly for the Spurs. Not the type who you throw it in the post to make plays, but a live body that will generate points off loose balls. He's also a good passer for his position - although he doesn't utilize that skill as well as he could in the offenses he was in. If a big goes to double on Duncan - he'll find the open spot and be available for the dumpoff down low.

The concern Spurs fans should have is how Pop deals with his lack of focus at times. He's normally not tuned in for a full 48 and doesn't play with the discipline Spurs teams normally do.

Specifially vs LA - he does give someone who can match up with Odom when he's at the 4 spot. Great athleticism when healthy but too short/light to bother Gasol in the post. He also doesn't have a chance guarding Bynum.

So not quite Twin Towers but a very good addition for the Spurs. I still don't see it being enough for SA to win with it unlikely Ginobili being close to 100%, LA still having the size and depth advantage, and the Spurs having no one to guard Kobe, but its a great move.

This is a great analysis. I totally agree.

The Spurs need both the 3 point shooting from Bonner and the rebounding. That is what this entire debate is about. How can we maximize what both Drew and Bonner add to the Spurs. It does no good to add one and delete the other. It has to work both ways.

Good post. As far as the some of the utility Gooden will give the Spurs, we can't forget that if he can draw 1 or more extra fouls against Gasol/Odom, that would be a huge plus for us. And, ditto on picking up the loose ball/trash for some lay-ins. Can't wait to see them playing together, especially when Manu gets back. I think our chances have gone up considerably. No illusions, but happens in the NBA and we could do it.

nice thoughts... i think that Gooden can DEFINITIVELY guard Gasol though... Bowen would then be assigned to Odom and we'll free kobe to a one man show...

You are seriously underestimating Pau Gasol. Duncan has trouble guarding him. He is very talented and he has torched the Spurs. Not to mention Gooden is a terrible defender (or has been so far in his career) and now you think he can guard one of the best, if not the best offensive big men in the league?

Pau Gasol is not unstoppable. Given the right defensive schemes and he can be shut down. He's not "the best offensive big men in the league"

He is not a traditional low block player but has great touch. Do you not watch how he torches the Spurs?

No one is unstoppable, but Gasol is a GREAT offensive player with size/speed and skill. Name another big that can shoot as well as him from anywhere on the floor, pass as good as him and drive and finish at the rim as good as him. He has all of those tools and while he may not be the best at each individually, I cannot think of anyone who has all of them combined at that level.

Gooden said so, but it's Pop's call and it doesn't look like we'll see him tonight.

Can Gooden stick after this year. Seems like a solid consideration alongside Duncan and Ian....

    How's the money look?

I'm sure he's got to be tired of bouncing around to all of these different teams ... by that alone I hope he's inspired enough to kick all kinds of ass for the Spurs and earn a new contract this summer.

    I hope.
