President Barack Obama told AFL-CIO union leaders Tuesday in a videotaped address that the controversial Employee Free Choice Act will pass, signaling his full backing for legislation that makes union organizing easier.

"We will pass the Employee Free Choice Act," President Obama told more than 100 top labor officials in a closed-door meeting at the labor federation's winter gathering in Miami, according to people at the meeting.

The bill would make it easier for unions to recruit workers because it would let them join unions simply by signing cards rather than through secret-ballot elections in which companies can campaign against the union. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business organizations have been campaigning against the legislation.
This is a horrible piece of news, but I'm sure it's a payback for their backing in the election.

Secret ballots... a necessary must for general elections, but a burden to unionization. Get ready for higher costs for everything when workers are intimidated into unionizing

Look WH23, you have to remember that when a conservative says fascism or socialism, 95% of the time he has no clue what that word actually means. He just think it means "bad liberal!"

I know. I still hate it. The meaning of *fascism* and *socialism* isn't abstract but historical, and they're not the same thing. WC will turn around and call Obama a marxist tomorrow.

Some people need to get out of the sandbox and read some effing history, like now.

Offtopic, but have you played Civilization: Revolution at all? It's fun to pick Germany, make your official government "fascism" and churn out enough tanks and planes to destroy everyone.

The minicons running the show at NR are abysmally illiterate, and I wouldn't call Liberal Fascism a work of history. It's a polemic. The only people it will convince is those who already agree.

    Paul Gottfried:

There is in fact a considerable amount of discontinuity between the old issues of Commentary, including distinguished authors Peter Bauer, Elie Kedourie, Richard Pipes, and James Q. Wilson, and today’s greatly dumbed-down Commentary and its insipid imitations in National Review and Weekly Standard. Neoconservative writers of today are generally less well educated and more identifiably leftist than those from whom they are descended spiritually and/or physically. It is hard to imagine among the older generation the kind of abysmal cultural illiteracy that one finds in Jonah Goldberg and Rich Lowry, who make appalling factual mistakes about the French Revolution and about who was on which side in the Spanish Civil War. Curiously these minicons, who seem to believe that the French Jacobins articulated “conservative” positions while Catholic counterrevolutionaries were postmodernist leftists, also complain bitterly about their “neo” label.
You can't fix stupid, but you can encourage and perpetuate it.

Fascism is an authoritarian style. Marxism is a defined socialism style. President Obama shares traits of each.

Fascism is a radical, authoritarian nationalist ideology that aims to create a single-party state with a government led by a dictator who seeks national unity and development by requiring individuals to subordinate self-interest to the collective interest of the nation or race.

Rather than a dictator, we have the authoritarian democrats in power. In the case of unions, it seems to me they will become "the party class." Democrats are pushing to give unions more control. This new legislation that will allow removal of secret votes in unions is a method of fascism, and other forms of authoritarian control. As for president Obama's social engineering ideas. He is clearly has Marxist ideas.

So WC, would you say that the United States is imperialist?

Imperialism has two meanings; one describing an action and the other describing an at ude.
    1. Action: Imperialism is the practice of extending the power, control or rule by one country over areas outside its borders. The areas so controlled or ruled may be called that country's empire. Imperialism is a branch of Colonialism in which the controlled areas are formally declared to be its "colonies" or "protectorates." Imperialism is also used to refer to situations where the mode of control is less formal ; for instance where the dominant country's influence or control in the subordinate areas is economic, not involving overt territorial conquest.
