Technically the military doesnt justify harrassment or exclusion. The reason for the "don't ask, don't tell" policy is to preclude sexual orientation from consideration. Frankly, it's not the military's business whether or not one of it's soldiers, airmen, sailors, or marines is gay.

Having said that, I'm not sure why the military hasn't gotten out in front of this issue and pressed forward with open integration. I'm pretty sure desegregation made some people uncomfortable at the time...but they pressed forward and it's now a well-integrated force.

I think it's funny how so many people blamed Bush for "don't ask, don't tell" even though it was Bill Clinton's idea. I would say as long as the gay guys aren't having sex with each other when they're in combat then it's probably okay to let them be in the military. For my part, I could've cared less (though I never knew any openly gay airmen)...but to suggest that it wouldn't be a big issue among the troops probably isn't an accurate generalization either. I know more than a few bubbas that would certainly have a problem with it.

BUT....the military is really good at telling you to "shut up and color", so lack of comfort shouldn't be a reason to keep the policy.
