Oh so some discrimination is okay but some isn't. I agree its not a total apples to apples comparison but the principle of discrimination is still present. I also consider the issue compounded because in modern time we still haven't figured out how to treat people.

Civil Unions would give them the same legal protections (hospital visitations, purchasing property together, etc.) as marriage without opening up civil litigation reverse discrimination issues like forcing a priest to perform a service his religion did not approve of and/or getting civil damages if he doesn't...I am not a phobe and could care less about same sex relationships but that doesn't mean that I don't respect the right of someone to feel differently.
