D'oh!
I actually did know that, but had completely forgotten. I always associate both him and Dire Straits with having a very American sound.
Bob Dylan
Willie Nelson
Paul Simon
Tom Waits
Other
I probably go with 1. Other. 2. Dylan off your list...but it's a really ty list.
It's totally stilted towards Rock and Folk Music...but it doesn't even include the modern guy who stands only behind Dylan in terms of prolificity, hits, and having his songs recorded by other artists...
Prince.
..almost totally left out the guys that invented Rock and Roll...the guys that were writing songs that Dylan was listening to...
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
You also left out Cindy Walker.
In addition to Leiber and Stoller and Cindy Walker...
Cole Porter
Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart
Buddy Holly(he's the guy the Beatles were emulating).
Oh yeah...Kris Kristofferson too.
D'oh!

This list is both racist and sexist.

That would be Donald en---my personal choice for the greatest American anything in music!
Why? You just admitted that none of them are as good as the ones originally listed and that there have been several other males that oculd have made the list.
Townes is the . I know it's a cover but "dead flowers" is awesome.
btw don't forget about lightnin hopkins
oh yeah based off that list, Dylan
I said that none of them would have gotten my vote over Tom Waits, which isn't the same as suggesting that they're not as good.
Cheech Marin
I was wondering when someone was going to bring up the Man in Black.
Nice call.
Nuff said
Wow. He's a bad ass. He throws the finger.
And he makes an angry face while doing it.
