When I lived in Russia, I always thought that Pele was bigger the Maradonna. However, I doubt that most in in the U.S. would know either. Soccer just didn't catch on here, not that there's anything wrong with that .

I kind of want to know why Pele never received as much attention as Maradona. I don't really follow soccer anymore, but back when I was a kid and living in Eastern Euope, I thought that Pele was the man. But nobody ever talks about him anymore.
Because most of the people never saw him play and because he's a corporate rat that goes wherever the wind blows, while Maradona is the "rebel" and everybody knows how people love the "bad guys".
I don't follow soccer at all but can recognize these names: Zidane, Pele, and Beckham. Never heard of Maradonna and like the other guy I thought it was a typo for Madonna - then again I don't give two flying s about soccer and niether does America. America barely cares about any sport other than football and baseball anyway and even in a city like SA I bet there are more Cowboys fans than Spurs/any basketball team.
World's biggest living celebrity? I'm surprised there isn't a single real actor or actress on there, I'd figure Harrison Ford or some name like that would get a mention. I voted for MJordan because of my basketball bias and he's still a worldwide recognized brand name...but in retrospect Oprah, Michael Jackson and Yao Ming were superior choices. In this current climate the former is heralded as one of the largest and powerful figures in the world. She has enough money to buy out half of the poll's list with money to spare all the while influencing women worldwide.
And unfortunately for the world, anything the Western powers (namely the US of A) likes and deems cool, the rest of the world falls in place like dominos. Who do you think owns companies like MTV whose sole job is to sell cool to the new generation? When it comes to creating s om and generating popularity whether good or bad, the USA is where its fostered and developed. Because of this, soccer players will never get the recognition shared by celebrities of other fields.
